I have some wood that I pulled from the firewood pile a couple of years ago.

I have no idea what it is.

Can anyone ID this wood?

Here are a couple of scales that I moistened to show the grain.

Here are some blocks cut from it (ignore the hickory stave to the right, I know what that is :) )

The whole piece with the blank (made from rusty file my wife found in the yard) of my first knife:

I used this on my first two knifes (the ones on the left):

It is wood....I am almost sure of it!

Black ash, box elder burl, locust, ???????? only you know what it was when you cut it. In a photo and cut into slabs, many woods are hard to tell apart.

For what its worth, I'd put my money on Locust, either honey or black. With black locust there is a very distinct smell, almost like old gym socks. :D

1. I didn't cut it. This came from a load of mixed hardwood I get from the local lumber mill. It is the slab wood they cut when making lumber, they cut it (mostly) to firewood length and sell it by the truckload.

2. I don't remember smelling gym socks, so we can rule out black locust. :)

3. Since it came from a lumber mill, it would be a hardwood local to the Baltimore/Harford county areas of Maryland and probably something that is common as wood used for lumber.

Locust is commonly used for fence posts and other structures that need to be exceedingly weather/rot resistant.

One of the locust trees would be my guess from the picture. Do you have a black light? black locust will glow under black light

gsain, not trying to threadjack, but what is the name of that mill? I need a few long pieces of green lumber, and we don't have any mills down DC way (that I know of).

This was one of my early guesses, but seeing how walnut looks after getting a Truoil finish this keeps a lighter tone than walnut, but I am open to any suggestions. The knife on the right has the front part of its handle as walnut (front) so you can see the color difference with the same finish.

It looks like walnut to me, it usually gets that figure up around the crotch of the tree.

@aarongb: Oddly enough, the place is called "The Mill" It is on the corner of Reckord Road and Bel Air Rd, just over the county line into Harford county.

This looks like the place. Just to add to the confusion there is a garden center called "The Mill" in Bel Air that is NOT this place.

Thanks for the info!

I'm throwing in my vote for your wood being poplar. Very similar to a crotch piece I have out back.
