Hey guys. I am really new to knives and I have successfully made one real beauty... well, I put scales on a blank. Heres that knife...

I have started my second knife and this time, it has brass appointments. I am using some of the exact same buckeye burl as the knife above. As I am sanding things down I seem to be pulling brass dust into the wood scales and I think its discoloring the buckeye burl. Is there any way to get that out? It became most apparent as I got into the very fine grits. It seems to be turning parts of the wood a dull gray.

Any help would be appreciated!

Jay

Sand with strokes from the wood onto the brass, not from the brass onto wood. Another trick is to sand the handle and brass until it is ready for 400 grit. Then tape up the handle and sand the brass. Once the brass is done, tape up the brass and sand the wood on the handle.

Wow! Some things are so simple and obvious they fly right by me unnoticed. Thanks bladsmith! I'll definitely do this on the next one.

I was thrilled to discover masking tape applied, worked around in my hand and then pulled off took that gray coloration off!

Sure PT Doc :)

This was the selection process as I cut up the burl and discovered the usable scales.

I used a liquid inlay on some voids in the wood

And I built this crazy display :/

Also here is the knife I posted this question about.

That is crazy nice wood. The whole package really works.

What is the filler you mentioned?

OK so Im working on a new knife and this is happening again. This time the wood is a light colored maple and its unstabilized. as Im sanding the steel tang and scales together, dark dust is staining the light wood. Its not brass dust its either steel dust or more likely sandpaper dust as its breaking down on the steel. Am I doing something wrong as it sounds like whats happenning to me is uncommon. I tried pulling off the staining with tape like last time, but with it being unstabilized, its not working.
