Need Help

Whatever knife you choose, and whatever tools you choose you must like them, the feel, the colour, the sheath and everything.
Important is that you have to test the tools before you take them out in the woods and have to "depend" on them.
I use an F1 and a WM1, I will most likely not need the strength in those knives and they will probably survive me in case of a real situation. The F1 was designed for swedish airforce pilots to do what the ASEK and JPSK should do. As an anecdote, the knife F1 replaced was a red handled 3 bucks Mora with saw teeth on the spine :) but then if a swedish pilot crash somewhere he could just walk to the nearest house and call home.

So now you have to make three choices:
1, hatchet, axe or folding saw. The saw is safer.
2, 4-6" knife. The 3,5-4" is more useful if you also have something from 1.
3, LM, SAK, folder, WM1 type. Pick a good food preparing knife and a multitool.
As a backup you could bring an S1 type of knife, because that knife might need to be a backup all purpose knife if the rotating thing start spinning.
Also bring a decent knife to lend to people so you dont hand away your own.

Good luck.

thank you everyone for your input. you have been a great help. while on here i picked up another name-scrapyard- any opinions

I personally adjust Salamander's combo by adding a folding saw, and dropping the 4 inch fixed blade with a 3 inch folding. Worked great when I went camping last weekend.

Yeah, I wanted to say more about the possible variations, but ran out of time last night. I personally prefer a khukri in place of the hatchet, and the saw on my Swiss-Tool sees quite a bit of use as well. My fixed blade is a 4 inch knife that I made from a kit. It's got a pretty thin blade which makes it ideal for what I use the knife for the most: Food preparation! :p It slices veggies better than a lot of chef's knives that I've used. A lot of the knives that theblacksheep is considering could probably eat this knife for lunch, but it does everything I ask of it, and I feel that the chances of me needing that kind of toughness in this size of knife is remote enough that I don't loose any sleep over it.

You are quite right Codger but I said on a previous post that i have just got the Dumpster Mutt and will be using it as my main EDC so that is why I took the pic while it is still new !!!;)
The other two are safe queens to pass on to my son !!!

thank you everyone for all of the input. i had made up my mind on a fallkniven S1 and then some how found myself talking with Barry Dawson's grandson at Guns of the West show. i have heard of the name but didnt want to spend a small fortune for on of his knives but at the show the prices were 50% off of their internet price so i jumped on it- a GP5. thank you again for all the help. pics will soon follow.

TBS, when you talked to the grandson, did he happen to mention the heat treat on the 440c?
