I am a relative noob to these forums but have been a knife collector for most of my life. I am in the process of "personalizing" a Becker BK-11 and need some advice. I am making some custom scales out of birds-eye maple and don't know how to attach them to the tang of the knife itself. I would prefer to use some kind of system that lets me remove the if I want to BUT I guess I could live with some type of brass rivets etc as long as they look good ( the maple is beautiful and will finish really well). My shop skills are heavy in woodworking/shaping/finishing and light on metal work. I have considered using stainless hardware with a hex head bolt and nut that is countersunk in the grip, I would have to hand carve the hex shaped cutouts on one side after drilling the holes and I really don't wanna go there unless I have to...

PLEASE post suggestions and ideas as I am all ears.

Removable, I have no experience with.

Permanently attached I use Corby bolts (available in stainless, copper, and brass) and epoxy. Epoxy acts more like a sealant in that scenario as the bolts are what really hold the scales on.

Removable scales are fun. In the past I've simply used Corby bolts and deepened the slots with a hacksaw. That way the entire slot isn't ground away when you bring the bolts down flush to the scales, and you can remove them at any time with a pair of regular screwdrivers. For an ongoing project I'll be using chain ring bolts; I'll need to trim the shafts to the proper length for each hole so the heads sit flush against a slight countersink in the face of the scale.

I have done a few with removeable scales using 1/4" diameter folder pivots and 8-32 flat head screws. The hardware is availible at the link given in post # 3.
