Need info on a specific Blackjack - Urgent

I was actually posting over here before I found KF, but now am much more verbose on KF. A lot of good info both places.

And NGK was the one who told me that the 7 would be reintroed after Ken sorts everything
The word is he will start producing the classics again once he gets things rolling, cross your fingers :)

Garlic you maybe jumping to conclusions about BJ without knowing all the facts.
i'll remain skeptical that RMK is perfectly accepting of BJ's ripped off designs until i hear it from RMK. hey, there are many "buddies" in all industries who snake stuff from eachother without consent. there might be no way we can really know this until the horses' mouths speak. but to give BJ some credit, i believe cold steel ripped off the randal model 1 as well, but left off the subhilt, so in a sense BJ's ripoff has at least a little more variation from the original RMK.

Can we count the guys who make knives in the "Scagel" style? Hundreds. And how about the Loveless drop point? More hundreds - or thousands - make those. And both are styles far more distictive than a Randall No. 1. The Blackjack 1-7 was named Blade Best American Knife of the Year in its time, which doesn't mean squat to some, but was some reflection of the view of the the "knife community."

some can see blatant copies, some can't. to each his own. i personally wish i didn't have such a quick eye to spot this type of thing. i felt the same way when cold steel copied randall & tighe, when vtech ripped off chris reeve, & when mtech ripped off a number of makers, when dark ops ripped off ER, the list goes on. perhaps i am being cynical & just not open to the idea that friends can rip off friends. but i do feel like my point is still being missed - i'm not talking about the influence of a design element here & there, i'm talking about hijacking the entire blueprint of the knife, with such minor variation, that it's still pretty much a replica.

I get your point, but IMO you are simply wrong. The BJ has a fully convexed blade. Also, to the discerning eye, the composition handles are different (protruding bolt), as is the ricasso. But to each his own. Some people don't even like garlic - or so I've been told.

I've got one last question inspired by this knife. What is the purpose of a sub-hilt? I like it and think it is comfortable but have no idea why it originated or what it's purpose really is.

only vampires & blood-sucking leeches don't like garlic!

:p

for the record, Springer45 - i think it's a very nicely executed knife, just too randall-esque for my personal taste. no offense intended, i'm just one who has a roaring mouth.

None taken. I'll probably get a Randall one day, just not now and not for what I needed this knife for. I haven't been into knives for very long so I don't know about all of the past knock offs manufacturers have made. If the originator doesn't agree with it then I'd have to say I agree with you but I don't know and it doesn't seem like too many other people do either on this one for sure. All I know is it looks a hell of a lot like a Randall and takes one hell of an edge.

I have noticed significant differences between a Randall #1 and the Blackjack 1-7. Aside from more than a few grind differences, the Blackjack is thinner stock. Randalls are forged vs stock removal, on and on…

I own an Effingham 1-7 micarta subhilt and it has been a great knife. The A.W.A.C.s are a handy field knife as well.

Subhilts are an aquired taste, either you love them or hate them. They do provide a more secure grip.

I applaud Ken Warner for carrying on the line and it will be a joy to many when the classics are back. From some discussion, it looks like it might be later than sooner (by some standards).

Enjoy your knife, users have character. There was/is a 1-7 over in the for sale section this week. A.G. had a few with ATS-34 blades, the word shiny come to mind. Jim @ Treeman had a nice one in walnut left, last time I looked. He also had an A.W.A.C. at a good price. They are out there.

Cheers

I have a BJK Model 1-7 that is my favorite 'all around' hiking, camping, under the truck seat, fondle and play with knife.

As per ripping off Randall, I believe the "Classic Blades" logo on the blade suggests strongly that it is a copy of another knife and anyone who can't see that it is a Randall clone by this and all the other markings deserves to be stropped. Is there any history of lawsuits or bad blood to bear out the "you stole my design" scenario? A lack of such may suggest a certain level of complicity or collaboration between 'buds'....

What I am looking for at garage sales is a rare BJK Model 1-7 with a 'Randall' stamp.... I'll even post pics of this rare beast with the $10 price tag still attached.... :D
