I inherited a Civil War cavalry sword that reportedly belonged to my great, great grandfather, and I'm trying to locate info. on the manufacturer, etc. Any information on where to look would be appreciated.

The sword is a model 1860 Cavalry sword with the inscriptions: D.J. Millard, Clayville, N.Y. on one side, and: U.S. C.E.W. 1864 on the other.

Hi Steve,

Here are a couple of article you may find helpful. The same site has other resource artilces you may be interested in

This first one is a list of makers and tells a little about Millard. Apparently not a common find, in this day and age.
The C.E.W. is the inspector's mark and the date inspected. although the contract seems to have been issued in 1862, it's not unreasonable that you would see an 1864, as the contract was probably still being fullfilled.

There are a number of informative sites about the inspectors
and Google is your friend. You might also uncover more about Millard through some diligent searches.

Congratulations on a wonderful heirloom of family history.
