I'm about to pull the trigger on an American lawman. I don't care what anyone says about cold steel, this knife locks up solid as a rock and is built tough.

I wanted to know if they have discontinued the ones with the steel liners or not? If they have I might get two.

Yes they have been discontinued.

theyre great knives, but a tad pricey for my taste, but then again im a rather frugal individual

Why do you guy's consider them pricey? It's a small step up in price from the China steel+G-10 knives or the AUS-8+FRN knives, and it has arguably the strongest, most durable lock mechanism.

If there was ever a knife worth the money, it is an American Lawman, IMO.

Thanks for the info guys. I discovered this knife this morning browsing the forums and this afternoon I made a trip to a knife store that is about an hour away.

They had two of the American lawmen knives with the steel liners so I got them both. I know cold steel doesn't have the best reputation around here but I was impressed. I have some folders over 150$ that don't lock up nearly as solid as this knife. No blade play in any direction on either knife. I was impressed. They will be good users for sure! They almost feel like a fixed blade when open.

They are pricey for what you get

So far I'd say there's some truth to that. You can find pretty significant upgrades in steel in other knives within the 50-80$ price range (154CM, VG10, 14c28), so the Lawman's Aus-8 is a kinda lacking by comparison at around $70+.

Still, if you find them around 70$ even, I'd say it's a pretty fair price, if you don't mind the mediocre steel. Mine has much better build quality than I expected, so I don't regret the purchase.

Admittedly, I know very little about all these "advanced" steels and such, but for $61.05 i'm pretty stoked to be getting one! I ordered mine through Amazon with free shipping. In about a week (or so), i'll be wooping it up big-time!

I'll never spend the kinda money a custom Demko requires (not saying it's not a fine knife - it probably is I've seen some mighty fine youtube vids on 'em), but for a simple family guy like me (and given my chosen career path) a knife as solid as i believe the AL is for $61.05 is just about perfect.

Crimsontideshooter - i hope you were able to get yours. How do you like it so far?

I'll be dissembling mine and stripping off the teflon from the blade, locking bar and all pins that are "easily" removeable.

I bought two of the ones with the steel liners. I payed a considerable amount more than the 61 you quote, but I am supporting local brick and mortar stores so it's not bothering me much.

I've only had the knife a couple of days but so far I am beyond impressed. I've always heard people come down on cold steel in my short time here on bladeforums, but so far I'm thinking those negative claims might be unfounded. Maybe cold steel has some bad designs or poor quality on other knives, but that is not the case with the American Lawman. I have other more expensive knives that don't even compare to how solid the AL feels in your hand. The blade opens with an authoritative "whack" and has ZERO wiggle in any direction. I can't say that for my Manix 2 and other similarly priced knives. While the blade steel isn't the best around it holds up well. Other people have convinced me that AUS8 can hold it's own and has many qualities that some other more high end steels don't. (toughness)

I put it through it's paces cutting up cardboard (probably 150 cuts at least) and stabbing phone books and just generally messing around with it, and it held up well. The edge was a bit duller but it was still pretty sharp and had a lot of life left in it. I put this edge on using the Edge pro at 36 degrees inclusive, so I can't tell you how the factory edge would have held up. Mine came with dings in the edge that made it catch pretty bad when slicing paper, so that had to go. I think it happened when customers fondled the knife, they probably hit the edge on glass or something.

Anyway, I'm trying not to be too long winded. In short, I love the knife. It's the most solid folders I've personally ever touched, and it feels almost like a fixed blade when holding it. The ergos are near perfect for my hands, also. If CS offered this knife in a steel like S30V for something like $150, I'd buy two of those too. Hope this helps.

Have you used a Cold Steel knife in AUS-8 yet? I am impressed with the edge holding on the few I have actually used a lot. Cold Steel has the heat treat down good on these knives. I get better edge holding with these than with my Calypso in VG-10.

I get really sick of the cold steel bashing, cold steel makes a quality product, if you can overlook all the drama you will end up with alot of knife for a good price. I am going to order a American Lawman as I wait for my custom Andrew Demko AD-10! I hate that teflon coating though, much rather have a stonewash or satin finish...

Take it apart and hit it with some BIX and a wire brush, there are threads in Maintenance on how to do it.

Cold Steel makes good stuff, fun stuff and cool stuff.

Says the Sebenza fan...

Hmm. AUS8 and G10 doesn't add up to the price tag that Cold Steel has put on their blade, plain and simple.

With a Sebenza, the same is kinda true. Ti and S30V can be found in a knife for half the price of a Sebenza. That said, the fit and finish do add to the feeling f value, and that's more than I can say for Cold Steel.

What other AUS8 and G-10 folding knives are much cheaper, it's hard to find them at all. Like I posted above, most are China steel+G-10 or AUS8+FRN...and not much cheaper than $60. The durability and strength of the designs for Tri-Ad folders could be said to add an extra $10+ to cost just as you can say the fit and finish adds $200+ to a Sebenza.

If we are looking at base materials there are a lot of people selling $100-$200 knives made out of dirt-cheap 1095, but it's their good design and process that sells them.

The jump up to S30V or 154CM isn't even worth buggering over, that is if it's even there to begin with.

The Lawman actually falls in line with the price of other knives going by materials, but is a bargain in the eyes of a lot of people when looking at the bigger picture.

I think my AL was worth every penny and I think its one hell of a value when you consider the lock and overall package. That being said I think its pretty ridiculous to say cs aus8 is on par with steels like 154cm and s30v when its clear its not. AUS8 is a great beater steel and suits cs folders well but I wish they would offer up different variety of steels.

This is mostly internet forum stuff. My experience goes along with tests and experience from Ankerson and others like reported here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793481

When you do get a production knife with a hard enough blade in S30v it's more likely to chip out. A tiny bit more edge retention when every thing is just right doesn't come close to the importance of ergonomics, blade design, edge geometry, durability and reliability of construction.

Talking down on 440C, AUS8, 1095, etc. just makes the collectors and show and tell guys happy. It makes companies happy too, since those guys convince others who are new to pay more for knives with other steel and it's higher premium than necessary.
