Have you used a Cold Steel knife in AUS-8 yet? I am impressed with the edge holding on the few I have actually used a lot. Cold Steel has the heat treat down good on these knives. I get better edge holding with these than with my Calypso in VG-10.
Yep. I used to use a Ti-lite for generic EDC tasks (it would probsbably have scared the piss out of my coworkers/customers if I had used it as my work knife, so it didn't see much intense use) for a while before I sold it. I also used to have an Ontario Rat-1 in Aus-8 which I used a bit more. It wasn't bad steel, much better than 8cr13alphabetsoup/440A/420HC/Whatever the stuff Gerber uses is called, and imho better than the stuff Victorinox uses, but still not exactly great stuff for cold steel's price (considering you can get 154CM blades from Benchmade or Spyderco at around the same price point, or 14c28 blades from Kershaw at a much lower price, both of which I personally prefer).
I intend to use the American Lawman I just got as a work knife, though, so I guess I'll get a chance to take another look at CS' Aus-8...Maybe I'll like it more this time around. It wouldn't be the first time my impressions of this company have changed for the better.
Talking down on 440C, AUS8, 1095, etc. just makes the collectors and show and tell guys happy. It makes companies happy too since those guys convince others who are new to pay more for knives with other steel with a higher premium than necessary.
Cool story bro.
