Help! Iam waiting for a village sirupati to come in one of the next shipments. Can someone who has one tell me how the are? I can't afford a top of the line right now but just want something a little longer and slimmer than my 15" ak. I missed a deal on a village short sword that looked great. Are they usually that nice or was that an exception? Iwould appreciate it if someone could help me . Thanks

Just fine.
Really, they actually are just fine IMHO. The ones lately seem to be the visiting kami type where the kami has access to the power tools and can grind and polish their khuks out. They are pretty nice all around, but for the price they best buys. And you can use them without feeling guilty. So as you use it, you begin to become a unit.

Thanks Rusty, I am not use to buying things that I cannot see, Let alone handle. I would not even consider it if it was not from Uncle Bill . The months of reading this forum and talking to Bill time from time has made me feel comfortable with your opinions. I,m sure Bill will pick a good one for me. If for nothing more than to shut me up!

Ice,
Comparing my Shop 1 20" Sirupati with my 17" village Himali Sirupati, the only obvious differences beyond size are:
-the villager has a satin finish instead of a mirror polish, with some grind marks visible
-the villager has a thin flat buttplate, vs. the scrolled buttplate from Shop 1
-karda & chakma on villager are smaller and less well finished
-the scrollwork and inlay on the villager is perhaps not quite as well done, although the difference is quite subtle and may just be my subjective opinion based on the well-known marketing principle that we tend to value more highly items we pay more for, which leads to the last apparent difference:
-the villager cost less than half as much.

Ice, we will be getting more villagers in -- I just don't know what or when. I am always surprised but we will get you something, don't worry. And, you always have a trade option and we guarantee the villagers, too.

So, far out of perhaps 150 villagers I have had three returned. One for a broken handle which I replaced. I did tell everybody that I would cover handles in the guarantee, didn't I? And a couple of damaged blades. One loser out of fifty I can live with.

I think the 15" AK and the 20" or 21" Sirupati are my two favorite designs.

I would almost _prefer_ a good stout 15" AK rail-common villager for all around use as you won't feel guilty no matter what happens to it, though do I think the Sirupatis need to be made out of the better steel.

Just my two cents.

That's one of the gambles with the village models, Dave. We don't know what kind of steel it is. We check the edge and if it seems hardened properly that's about all we can do. As I said, the odds of getting a viallge model that will have to be returned is running one in fifty about.

I reviewed a 17.5" village sirupati not too long ago. Mine is BEAUTIFUL with nice brass inlays, a horn handle, and a flat buttplate. The chakma and karda are the largest, most nicely finished I have ever seen, although these are NOT typical of village models. A+ for the village models!

Thanks Bill and everyone. It sounds to me that I should'nt have much to worry about. The chance of something with a decent blade and fair finish sounds good. Like I said it will be for use, not the wall. But ya still like it to look neat. I could just kick myself for missing Pala's short sword awhile back. that will teach me to procrastinate, or how ever you spell it.THis style looks to me like the best cross of a good work knife and a fighter. If you know of a better one tell me.

O.K. Mike, you got me there . The Gelbu is defenetly the one for that . So maybe 2nd best.
