need knife buying advice

For a 5" take a look at the Scrapyard knives 511 !

SYKCO 511
The SYKCO 511 was premiered at the 2011 Blade Show and is the first in a series of knives. It makes a great day camper with its 5.5" blade. The superior edge holding of SR101 steel makes it a great blade for most activities. The Performance to Price ratio is upheld with this knife. Blade Finish: Black Grind: Slightly Convex Saber Grind Blade Length: 5.5" OAL: 10" Blade Thickness: 3/16" Blade Width: 1 3/8" Handle: Resiprene C Steel: SR 101 Rc: 58-60

At $89 it's a hell of a knife.

I just came across an interesting thread in our Traditional forum.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/940687-New-Zealand-Bush

I thought id show some pics of our bush where i spent most of last week...My good friends wife (in her infinite wisdom) decided she would like to try oppossum trapping as a career change..she was allocated a block in the MOTU that we affectionately call the BADLANDS...it is not for the faint hearted or the inexperienced to be in there...We were hunting in the Wairata for red stag when we recieved a message that she had not returned to camp..an official search and rescue mission was launched and we found her 3 days later, wet, cold, hungry, bleeding ,very humbled but very much alive.....we travelled light so i had my moose and sharpfinger only.....

Scan down the thread for pictures of the knives this experienced outdoorsman took on a hunting trip.

I agree with Dakota, I see know reason to buy a fixed blade knife anymore that has be be on your belt in a sheath. the higher end folders are as solid as a fixed blade full tang knife when opened. Thats why I only have folders in my collection. I can grab one and tuck it in my pocket comfortably. Even the larger folding knifes I own are supprizingly comfortable in the pocket. I recomend a Benchmade Onslaught. its a size knife that is pretty comfortable to carry. I cant see that I will ever want to strap a sheath to my hip.

I don't think Dakota was implying that a folder is just as strong as a fixed blade because it's simply not true. I think he was implying that most backpacking can be accomplished with a SAK classic or other small folder and I agree. So my advice is carry what you like. All of the knives you mention are solid knives. Pick the ones you like the most and go use them.
