Need Knife to Match my Beautiful Rifle: Pics inside

I recently finished a custom rifle build. A friend of mine hand carved the stock out of a beautiful chunk of Claro Walnut that I had. I really want to purchase a knife, and have some scales made out of the leftover stock wood, so that I have kind of a "matching set" to pass down to my boys. I am having a very hard time determining what knife would suit this purpose. I was looking at some CR and Benchmades. Obviously it will be a field dressing / all around camp knife to pack in on hunts. I do not want it to be a fixed blade. Anyways, any advice on a quality knife for something like this would be great. And also on someone to carve these scales for me. My buddy doesn't work on knives. Only rifles. Here are some pics of the rifle to see what Im trying to do.

Beautiful stock man. Tell your buddy nice work. You may be scared to take that baby hunting now though lol.

Beautiful work! I'd suggest a Buck 110 or Alpha Hunter. Either one would be quite easy to rescale to match and would provide great service for your intended use. I think you could find a modder on the Buck subforum here that would undertake the job for you. Plenty of member posting photos there of knives they've done for themselves as well as members that do it more or less professionally.

I would want a very high quality Pukko, laminated blade custom made with your piece of wood for the hidden tang handle.

Beatiful rifle, and you will love that optic, I love mine.

He doesn't want a fixed blade. That said....it's gotta be a fixed blade! That gorgeous rifle is just crying for one. A nice Claro Walnut hunter?!? Great looking leather sheath?!? That would be killer.

Oops, I missed the folding part.

I remember you asking about a Sebenza vs a BM Stryker in another thread. If you don't want either of those, maybe a Hindered XM-18 3.5" with a skinner blade profile (or whatever profile suits you)? XMs come with a G10 presentation scale with titanium liner. The G10 can easily be removed and interchanged.

The quality of XMs are definitely on par with your desire to pass it down to the kids.

For a wooden handle folder you cant go wrong with the Benchmade Summit Lake, but they are not walnut if you want to match the gun. If you can find one of the Bone Collector folders by Benchmade they had walnut handles but most were axis locks which aren't the best for camp knives. Traditional knives like the Buck 55 or some of the Queen offerings come in walnut are great knives that will last a lifetime.

If it must be a folder get a BM Doug Ritter Griptilian(large), and get Keyman to do the scales.
He does a lot of Griptilians.

I've often thought about getting one and letting him put on Carbon Fiber or Micarta scales.
I love that Ritter blade shape.

The Sebenza is my favorite knife, but I wouldn't want to change the scales on a CRK(like you mention), but that's just my opinion.

I guess I could do a fixed blade as well. I didn't give it much thought. A nice leather sheath for it could compliment the set as well. How does Damascus steel hold up to being used in the field?

If you're willing to look into fixed blades, how about something from Helle Knives? Beautiful wooden handles, laminated steel (on most models), and leather sheaths.

If it's going to be a working rifle, I would send a picture of it to Bob Dozier and see if he can make a K4 with the same wood handle. Great working blade for a beautiful rifle. Whoops, just went back and read no fixed blade, your limiting yourself with that beautiful rifle.

I would man. I don't know how long you have hunted or how many animals you have field dressed but, I have done both for many years and tried both a fixed and a folder. I will never carry a folder again. Especially with nice compact fixed blades like the Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter, exc. available that can be easily carried where compactness is a concern. The main problem with a folder is the hassle of cleaning all the gore out of it. Especially when gutting a large animal like a moose. With fixed blades it's just a quick rinse in a river or puddle, a wipe on the pant leg, and back in the sheath.

Two minutes after I post and there you go changing your mind :grumpy::p

Just a thought. Maybe you should give it more thought before you start the 3rd thread on this same topic:p:D

I do think you would be happier with putting this on a fixed blade.
A ton of great custom fixed blades out there.
Gene Ingram and Charles May are two of my favorites, and both specialize in hunting knives, but also make other types. Bob Dozier would be another, but I prefer the flat ground hand rubbed finished blades of the first two a bit more.

I like production folders, but don't care for many production fixed blades. If you go fixed I would try to go with a custom(IMO).
Good luck.

Yup, I'd do both a fixed and folding if talking heirloom stuff....if there is enough wood available. The scales on a folder are very small in comparison to a large fixed blade. So if a folder is wanted, great...but a fixed blade is NEEDED to pair with a rifle as beautiful as that.

Oh, and Keyman....please mind your own business and stop posting pics. Dang those scales look sweet. My HK Axis works great, but never really gets carried because I have others that are just better looking for the same job. I'll be in touch.

Anyway, back on topic. There are many custom makers that could do some amazing stuff, but I haven't been able to afford any, so can't give any names. But there are also a number of production knives that would just look amazing with some nice wood scales. Thinking mostly about Benchmade, ZT, etc.

Now this has got me thinking what the ZT180 would/could look like with some awesome grained wood scales, and a custom leather sheath.
