Need Knife to Match my Beautiful Rifle: Pics inside

He doesn't want a fixed blade. That said....it's gotta be a fixed blade! That gorgeous rifle is just crying for one. A nice Claro Walnut hunter?!? Great looking leather sheath?!? That would be killer.

Woah marci I've rarely seen you get this pumped!:D

Get a fallkniven, they have nice knives in wood, Im a gun nut before anything else, whats the rifle chambered in?
Its beautiful work, I have a Colt Sauer in 300 Win Mag that has a stock like that, congrats

Man that is a gorgeous boomstick!

Very traditional though so you may want to check into having one of the knifemakers on the forum create something. Clearly a folding hunter would be a great choice!

The rifle is currently set up in 30.06. I have multiple barrels and bolts for it, so I can switch out based on what / where Im hunting. 300winmag, 270win, 30.06, and 7mm. I picked these calibers because i want my boys to always be able to find ammo down the road in case they don't reload like I do. My synthetic stocked custom rifles are what I normally hunt with. 7wsm, 6.5x47, 6mmDasher, which is getting into some custom chambers. This gun was made with a BAT action, Krieger barrel, Jewel trigger, PT&G hinged bottom metal, and Talley ultralight one piece rings. Its a hammer. With hand loads it shoots about 1/4in, basically a ragged hole at 100meters.

Thank you for all the responses guys. I am really torn between a folder or fixed blade. Whatever I get, I want it to have that "classic Americana" look to it to match the rifle. You guys have my gears turning. Keep coming up with ideas for me. I appreciate it greatly

IF you have enough wood leftover, set it aside and decide what you want. If it is just to go with the rifle for hunting trips, I would think a nice 5" - 6" blade fixed skinner. Its a very traditional blade for a very traditional rifle. maybe even matching scabbard to sling in nice tooled leather.

Are you wanting a custom blade, or a store bought and mounted blade. There are several makers on here I could see doing that very well.

And all this could be just talk if you already have something in mind.

BUT SAVE THAT NICE CLARO NOW.

The sling on the rifle is hand made by Pat Sinclair in Montana. He makes some really nice leather slings, belts, etc.

The only field dressing that the knife needs to do is gut, skin, and quarter game. Im thinking of going with a fixed blade for this. And if I have enough of the Claro left with good grain pattern, then maybe Ill do a folder with custom scales for the boys to use around camp for camp related stuff…like cutting cordage, fire sticks, etc.

If you want "classic Americana" then a custom Buck 110 or 112 Ranger should fit the bill. But you really need to have a fixed blade drop point to go with it. Beautiful rifle, BTW.

Try to find some Fallkniven blanks . I put mahogany scales on my H1

Great looking rifle.

Fallkniven doesn't sell their blanks any more, unfortunately. Unless you can find a dealer with old stock.

Enzo does have some nice blanks you can start with if you want to try one yourself, or kits that give you the parts and you could then use your wood in it's place.

Pete Winkler does custom handles on knives. The BRK guys recommend him for handle re-scaling. He could do the whole knife too I am sure, but he's a pretty busy one man operation too.

Custom rifle (beautiful, btw) deserves a custom knife, imo...

Exactly! A custom rifle means a custom knife. And I'm thinking for a hunting rifle it really ought to be a drop point skinner with lots of belly.

Here are mine.

A rifle I had built on a Steyr M1903 Mannlicher-Schönauer action from 1909 I bought sometime in 1995-1998 in Hawaii. Custom Krieger barrel chambered in 6.5X54mm MS with a 1-12" twist rate. And a Mayo one off custom Tom made for me in the same time frame. After buying the action knowing I'd have a rifle built on it, I knew I'd want a custom hunting knife too.

That is beautiful work on the rifle stock. There are several makers here who could make a beautiful fixed blade to complement it. You asked about how damascus steel performs; generally speaking it depends on the steels the damascus comprises (usually two steels). Common steels used include 1095, 1084, 15N20, L6 and 52100. They are all respectable steels and should serve well if the right person is making it. Don't discount good stainless though; several makers here are working with very nice powder metallurgy steels which will perform very well.

I would strongly suggest spending some time in the custom fixed blades for sale area, get an idea of what you like and contact a maker.

I would love to see the final gun & knife set when it's finished!!

I'm not up to par in the custom market, but production level the first 2 that popped in my head were
Benchmade Grizzly Creek (folder)
Benchmade saddle mountain Skinner (fixed)

Beautiful fun by the way.
