Hello :)

I'm leaving for a fishing weekend tomorrow. The first since... a LONG time.

I wanted to bring a custom knife, but I had unplanned expenses and can't afford it anymore :( So here's what I'll bring.

Victorinox Climber
Ranger RD6 (wich is in a vinegar bath right now)
HI 18" Ganga Ram (to leave in the camp/car)

When I was little, we were half way in the forest in the car and we found a beaver's unfinished buisness in the middle of the road and we had to walk the other half to get an axe. That's why I keep the Ganga Ram.

I will also try to make fire, a lot of them, but it has been raining a lot lately (well, all the $&?! summer actually). For this I will bring a firesteel, a piece of magnesium ( not "pure", AM60B) and M. Estella's pdf on bow and drill. (printed 4 by pages, hippy me)

Ah, and old socks to make some charcloth.

Any last minute advice on making fire when everything is as wet as... naaa, not outside of W&C but you see where I'm going with this.

If you're not locked into primitive, a small squeeze bottle of camp fuel...like a lighter fluid container...is mighty welcome sometimes. :)

Rubber bands made from tredder inner tube.[I think some people call them Ranger bands]. Very useful just as they are, but they make an excellent waterproof firestarter.

Hello fellow qc, what's with the shitty weather?!?!
I myself haven't been able to go out and enjoy the summer much, I'm planning on making a week trip maybe towards the end of august, hopefully this non-sens will be done.

Sounds like you got it covered, Maybe a couple cotton balls soaked in vas?:D
have a blast!

Thanks Tony, but I'm leaving tomorrow.

I guess magnesium and PJCB will do the trick.

But if you people have some links, text or vid, about starting fire in the rain, would be appreciated.

I don't know if its reccomended, but I find it easier to get it started at the base of a large tree or rockface, which offers some kind of cover from the rain.

Make a square log cabin around your fire once it gets going. This will help dry out the wood if it is damp from rain. To start the fire, try to find as much dry stuff as you can, or split some wood and see if you can find something dry inside.

Good luck and have fun!

In GA, If It's raining and I want a fire first thing I do is look for some fatwood, worth talking some along. PJB's are great, Im not sure about the socks for char cloth though, the ones I've tried though cotton had enough elastic that it was useless, I prefer old jeans or t shirts.

Is a cheap Bic lighter out of the realm of possibilities or did I miss something?
Corn chips (Fritos) are excellent fire starters, try one.

I will bring the bic and will have access to dry wood inside the cabin.

But I wan't to practice my skills too.

It still is raining this morning :( Hope the magnesium will work.

If you are going to play around with magnesium it might be a good idea to look at what you can do with aluminium - Thermite.

[Thermite respects very few things, and will breeze through you like you weren't there, play safe].

A piece of fatwood and some dryer lint. the fatwood burns hot and will usually stat other moist wood burning.
