New here!

I have a request to make a pry bar type tool. I figure it will be 3/16 x 1.5 by 8. I need a good strong steel that won't break under a prying or lever load. It will have a chisel point.

I have looked at D-2, O-1, S30v and CPM 154.

What steel would you recommend?

well for a pry bar like tool I would recomend A2 or S7. but out of the steels you listed O1 would be the best.

Thanks J-siah,

I wonder if I should be looking at blade steel at all.

Is anyone familiar with a chart listing steel uses and properties?

You want a lath martensite, not plate martensite, all of those have too much carbon for a pry bar. And unless it needs to be stainless I would stay away from the carbide forming steels too (all that you listed are).

5160 would probably be perfect, though I have no first hand experience.

if it also has to hold an edge cpm3v i have done all kinds of abuse to 3v and while it does not like it, it sure takes it
