I'm going on summer vacation on a couple of weeks, and am selling several stuff that I'm not using (knives) so I'm gonna have some money to spend on some usefull gadget's

I currently have the following camping/outdoor related stuff with me next to the normal camping gear (Big tent / MSR cooking stuff etc).

- Peter Atwood Mini-Prybar
- Numerous Spyderco knives, Large Sebenza and Fallkniven F1
- Sliver Gripper Tweezers
- SureFire G2 flashlight / Arc AAA / Arc LSL-S / MiniMag+Opalec
- Large Firesteel
- Doug Ritter Mini Survival Kit (just for fun) I'll doubt if I will be more then 1 mile from civilization this summer.
- Leatherman WAVE (have several others)
- Several feet of paracord
- Garmin eTrex Vista
- Duck tape

So, any cool stuff/essentials that I'm missing? Should I get a Zeiss 5x10 T* MiniQuick? I don't have a binoculair currently, my eyes are pretty good so I don't know if 5x would do anything?

Ted

ps. camping is pretty civilized, since we have an 8 month old daugther now...

Ted, since your eyes are pretty good, the Zeiss MQ will be especially effective for you. I use it as a kind of spotter scope, checking out the trail ahead of me, or for a quick look at something (like a bird) in the middle distance I can't quite make out.

Foir any extended observation, yes, binoculars are a much better idea.

Esav beat me to it. The Zeiss Mini Quick is an awesome little "scope". If you want binoculars, look at the Steiner Predator 8 X 22.

How about a Longbow Micra ? Best value for a 1 watt Luxeon equipped LED flashlight. A separate accessory called the Eco tube will allow you to use 2 AA batts with the light.

My daughter was also 8-months old when we took her summer camping for the first time. :)

grnamin, I like the looks of those Longbow's but already have an Arc LSL-S which I guess have similair output. I think I'll wait with another 123 light till Arc, HDS Systems and PeakLedSolutions work out their disputes and come out with the one and only light.

Steven, like those Kelle Kettle's! Lots of other info on that site too!

Esav, will check out the Zeiss

Any other 'can't live/camp without them' gear out there? ;)

I am very nearsighted myself. What kind of binoculars or monocular would you folks recommend in my case?

Have been looking at the Bahco Laplander - looks good. Anybody compared it to the Spyderco Spydersaw?

Ted

Ditto re: Laplander.

The Zeiss 5x10 T MiniQuick is very cool. I use mine often. The only thing I wish it had is protective caps for the lenses and a lanyard ring.

You need a good SAK!

How about a aussie Hootchie?

Just a couple of suggestions:

-an LED headlamp. I'm partial to the Princeton Tec Aurora and Petzl Tikka Plus
- a Brunton Iso-butane camping lantern
- Crazy Creek or Thermarest camping chairs

A good pair of buck skin roper gloves...

Definetely nice to have if you have any manual labor to do.

A question... What the heck is an australian hoochie?

Gloves, that's a good idea. I do have some fleece ones but almost froze my hands of when I had to put on 'snow-chains' on my tires last winter.
What's a good site to get those Buckskin ones?

I do have a Tarp ( Hilleberg 10XP ).

The Arc4 is nice, but I'm gonna wait till the 'war' between Arc/HDS Systems/PeakLed is worked out and all the bug's are gone from the Arc4 design. Still a very good concept though...

I'm covered for a lantern and chairs already.

LED lamp - waiting for what Arc comes up with...

SAK - still have my very first one, now about 20 years old... (blade/small blade/can opener/bottle opener)

Thanks for all the tips.
Ted
