years ago doing field research in the glades and littoral zone of Lake o, aerial photos and compass helped a great deal more than the GPS we used. The accuracy wasn't nearly as good back then (depending on mode), and we always had to correct coordinates against a base station upon return, but the sat images/aerial photos and compass were much more reliable as navigation aids. GPS is great, but doesn't negate the need for basic navigation skills with a map and compass. Then again, I've been in the geospatial industry for a long time.
I've had a variety and the old suunto m3 is a great value in a base plate model.
