Last weekend I lost my Mini Griptilian, and need a new EDC. I definately see this as an opportunity to upgrade.
I really liked the axis lock, and thumb hole in the sheepsfoot blade for opening. The only thing about the knife I didn't like was the handle size...a bit small to get a good grip on for serious cutting.....

Knives I'm considering

BM Ares 732
Spyderco Para
Al Mar SERE 2k
BM 710HS

Right now, I'm leaning toward the 732, seems like just the right size. However I don't know anything about the 154CM blade and considered the Para due to the thumb hole for opening. I would have to buy the SERE 2k on recommendation of you folks if you think size is OK for an EDC - as no one around is a stocking dealer where I could handle one. Seems like the 710HS just might be to big too...
I will say that I would have already bought the Para, but what is with most Spyderco's having only tip down carry? That is a big negative to me.

TIA for your responses. If there are any other models I should give serious consideration to, let me know.

I bought a SERE 2000 about a year ago based on recommedations that I had read. I was getting rid of my Strider SnG because it just didn't feel right in my hand. The SERE is a really tough knife, even with a spear point, that takes and holds an edge really well. Most importantly, to me anyhow, is that it fits my hand supremely well. I can wrap all of my fingers around the handle when I hold it. Despite having a palm filling handle, it is not too big for an EDC. This might be due to the fact that it rides low in the pocket thankd to the position of the pocket clip. Good luck on your search!

Don't over look the Buck/Mayo TNT frame lock folder. Picked one up a week ago and the quality is definetly on a par with my Sebbie. Not as robust mind you but overall build quality is superb. S30v blade steel too. Maybe a bit lighter than what you are looking at but no less as tough. keepem sharp

154CM is steel used in jet engines, good stuff. Have you looked at the full size Grip? Another that I like but is going out of production is the 806DM AFCK. It has plenty of handle. The older 800 AFCK is very desireable if you can find one. These AFCK's are somewhat comparable to the Spyderco "Military" model.

Can't go wrong with the Sere 2000 either.

Thanks for your input.

I wouldn't have looked at the Buck, it looks very nice.

I had a Almar Sere2000, it's really a great knife, never let you down! or you can try a SOG vision or Camillus CUDA dominator

I'd also go with THE 710HS but I'd aldd the Spyderco Manix for your consideration as well.

The Buck/Mayo is an awesome knife, and I also highly recommend it. As I do the Calypso, Jr. ZDP 189. There are so many GREAT knives out there!!

Sledgehammer - It's probably a wise consideration, but I figure if I'm gonna be is a situation where I get pinched because my blade length is to long - that may be the least of my worries....

....I like the Spydie Para and Manix....but what is with the tip down carry?... as the only option.... I just think it's backwards - just my .02

Not a lot of love for the 732........

I wonder if I'm the only person that trys to stay around my local legal blade length limit? :)

I do, but my local blade limit is 5-1/2". :D

If you loved the Mini-Griptilian but thought it was too small, why not get the full-sized Griptilian?

Yep, Ritter grip would be a nice upgrade, doesn't have the opening hole but the thumb studs work well and its a big light knife with a great blade shape in top notch steel. My other rec would be the Cam Dominator, frame lcok, s30v solid piece available in clip or tanto point.
My own edc is the para and I think its perfect but the tip down thing never really bothered me at all. It is a super strong, light sharp knife that will handle any edc chore I could throw at it.

the benchmade 707 has a very similar blade to the mini grip, but a nice handle,,also really like the spyderco paramilitary,,

cant go wrong with either

From your choices and post, the 732 and SERE are notable. I carry a 732 as one EDC and have used it extensively over the last few months. It's still solid, easy to sharpen, a slimmer handle than the Grip and a nice size for EDC.

The SERE is thicker handled than the 732, but comparable. I got one used and it was another I used hard without any problems.

Both knives are tanks.

The others you mentioned aren't shabby, either.
