Need new knife for new rules

Hi everyone, a 3" or less rule has just been established at my place of employment making my EDC's worthless. I have done a lot of research with little hope. I need a blade 3" or less but I have large hands and everything I find has a small handle. Before the new policy at work I carried a Spyderco Byrd Crossbill or occasionally a Kershaw Cyclone. The Cyclone handle fits my hands nicely. Technically, I only want the knife for personal protection. I am currently on a tight budget so 60.00 or less would be nice. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Maybe a Spyderco Delica or Kershaw Leek. I know the handles are smaller but try one out. There are some other really good options like Strider, CRK or higher end Spydercos but they don't fit within your budget. One is the Spydrco Sage series. A Sage 1 is less than $100 and incredibly well made with larger handle.

I'd recommend a 3" Spyderco with a finger choil. Caly 3, the Sage line, or the new Chaparral. You might be able to get away with a Native, which has a 3 1/8" blade (handle to tip), but has less than 3" of cutting edge. The Delica, while a fine knife, is not for people with larger hands. The Caly 3 or a Sage, despite being practically the same size than the Delica, will fit larger hands much better because the finger choil adds grip area.

Oh, I just noticed your $60 limit. Try a Byrd Meadowlark. Same size, with finger choil. The steel won't be as nice as the higher end Spydercos, but if all you're going to carry it for is self-defense (and the occasional box tape or loose thread), it'll do fine.

A few years back, I got the urge to try to find a good 3" blade to go along with my larger EDC as a sheeple friendly knife.. I must have bought over 20 knives just trying to find which one was the best for me.. and I gotta say, the BM minigrip will do everything you want and more.

And you can find it for around 60 bucks if you look hard enough

What about the Native?

I have two Natives - one is 3 inches and the other is just under 3 1/8 inches. The CF is under 3 inches but is over his limit. I really like the Native but he should measure the blade before he buys it.

maybe one of the older vg-10 kiwi's, has a finger choil for larger hands, and fits the blade length requirement and it has a good steel. and if you cant find that then try one of the newer ones with the antler(?) inserts and 8cr13 steel, definitely fills out the hand better

If you look around the net a bit, you can find a waved Delica for under $60.

Being the knife is for "personal protection", you make like a waved knife.

Any knife is a < 3" knife regardless of handle size, assuming you have access to a grinder or belt sander. Behold the S.U.C.K. (Spyderco Urban Combat Knife)! It started life as a FS Paramilitary but with mods it's now just a hair under 3" and also tip-up. I used to spend a lot of time in the V.A. Medical Center when my Dad was still living, and I still spend a good deal of time in D.C. In both cases the blade limit is 3" so I made this to suit. It has a legal blade but still a full-length gripping surface.

I agree with elkins45. If I were in that situation, I'd look into cutting down one of my current favorites, as that would give you the same grip you know and love, with a 'legal' blade length. Then again, I'd probably just continue to carry the same knife/knives as I always did, just hidden better. The thing is, neither of those options gives you the excuse to get a new knife, so I'll suggest some of my favorite ~3" knives, that work well for me with my large hands. First is my Native III, which I have waved, used for everything and am intimately familiar with, then my Boker Plus (CLB designed) Trance, which might be the best small folder for self defense that I've tried, as I really like the grip I get on it. That being said, did anyone say it had to be a folder? If not, get yourself a good neck knife, and carry it under your shirt. It shouldn't draw any unwanted attention, and it should be faster and easier to use under stress.

I really appreciate all the feedback! You knife guys cut right to the chase.:D

I have a Kershaw Leek that I'm carrying now but it is too small. I'll look into everything mentioned ASAP. I was tempted to shave down the Byrd but all I have is a heavy duty grinder and a lack of patience. I'm also aware that budgets were made to be broken...
