Need non-stainless fixed blade recommendation please.

I bought a Frost Mora high carbon fixed blade for $9 and I love it. Easy to sharpen, holds an edge, and takes abuse well. My first non-stainless knife is probably the reason I am impressed. Anyone know specifically what kind of steel it is?

Also, based on the fact I like this "cheap" knife so much, can anyone recommend something similar in design and size (+/-4" blade) with some traditional looks? I will be using it for primitive camping (carving bow drill sets, making traps, building shelters, etc.). I will also use it for cleaning deer, fish, small animals.

I would like to keep it $200 or less, but I have thrown down for more than one Chris Reeve so I can be swayed considerably higher.

Thanks.

I would reccomend an Anorexic Badger from Busse combat. There were only a hundred or two made, but they are near perfect for a camp knife. Nice and slim for slicing, great steel, great design. Check the For Sale forums here. I beleive that there are a few for sale around $230-$250.

Dozier knives --> D2 blade (semi stainless)

Busse Combat --> INFI (I think it's similar to 52100)

There are many knife makers who use carbon steel in their knives, and will cost you less than $200.

Should be sufficient for EDC, field knife, camp knife or even self defense knife. I know A2 will take an excellent edge, and will hold it too.

Well, you've got some great choices there!
My vote goes for the Swamp Rat line of knives. They're damn near industructable and you won't believe the prices. They are the manufacturer & sell direct to the public. You can only buy them on their site. Lifetime warranty covers abuse too !
Check out this link & do a search for reviews/opinions on the model you like. Outstanding kinves, well suited for your planned uses. Let us know what ya get.

If you wanted to spend the money and happened across one of the smaller CRK One piece Range knives, you would have a great knife. Also, I will second the Swamp rat recommendation above as they are a tremendous value with a no BS warranty.

more moras!

beckers

check out some knives by the makers on the forums... lots of talents on these boards... and hey, why not promote sales on this great board?

If you are looking for knives that are similar to the Frosts Mora but better looking, you might try the Ragweed Forge site. He has a large selection of knives from Norway, Sweden (mora), and Finland and other knives, as well as many other items that are excellent for primitive camping. He is also a great person to talk with and do business with.

A second source would be Kellam Knives which has primarily knives from Finland.

Since no one else has mentioned them, I'll put a word in for the Cold Steel Master Hunter. It's made of CS's Carbon V, which takes a ferocious edge and holds it well. The handle is of Kraton, which is nice and grippy. I have the SRK version (a 6-inch fixed blade) and it has done well. The blade will rust, though, if left wet, so it's definitely necessary to keep 'em dry.
The sheath on the Master Hunter, I think, is made of concealex. If it's anything like the sheath of my SRK, it will hold the blade very well. One other definite upside to this model is the price - you can get it as a factory second for $45. They are sold by CS here -

I know a very reliable source who owns a Trail Master factory second; he has not had any problems with it and heartily recommends the line.

This post kinda looks like an ad for Cold Steel; not exactly my intention, but I think the Hunter is a knife that could fit your bill well. Happy knife hunting and, whatever you get, do keep us posted.

has a couple of small straight blades. The JKM-1 is just under a 4" blade and the Kumar Karda is closer to 7". You could get both for under $200.
