I recently did a trade with a Forumite. The Spyderco was represented as "NIB".
The blade looks good, so does the edge. The clip shows some scratches, I can live with that. The box is worn, I can live with that. But the spring release feels weak, that is very little pressure is needed to close, and the exposed part of the release bar has scratches on both sides! I can't imagine how anybody could scratch that, and I've owned close to a dozen Spydercos.

I don't want to say yet who it is because if I"m wrong I don't want to wrongly besmirch anyone. But is it normal or common to have scratches on a release bar and a somewhat weak pressure to release? Otherwise, I love the knife.

Dave, I did a Trade with a long time Forumite here for a couple of older Spyders that he stated were "New". I received them and like yours the Boxes were worn, but I too did not care at all about that. However, both had Clips that were scratched and some of the Coating worn off, this I would not accept so I reversed the Trade.

A NIB knife is considered by most Buyers to be MINT unless a differnt condition is otherwise stated by the Seller up front. A MINT knife should not have any signs of use, carry or extended/rough handling (ie. scratched Clip, scratched Lock Bar, etc). Those kinds of defects are not what I would consider "possible Manufacturing defects" thus they most likely occured after the knife left the shop.

What you are comfortable accepting is certainly up to you. However, I think that should you decide not to keep this one the Seller would probably have no problem taking it back and refunding your money once you pointed out the issues. Why didn't he notice these issues.... that can only be answered by him.

Good Luck.

I PM'd the other Forumite in question. He told me that he had received my Spyderco on a trade, represented to him as "NIB". He apologized for not inspecting the knife better before sending it to me. As I said, I understand a slight scratch on a clip, no big deal to me. But I don't know enough about this knife to know if the resistance offered by the back release is supposed to be that weak or not.

I think if you call a knife NIB, it should mean you bought it new. Not received it from some guy who called it NIB. I thought I was a receiving a knife 'driven' once, not twice or ? times.

I see on GB&U that the man in question has had generally favorable reviews, but one fairly recent and glaring exception to that. He has been courteous. I'm not out to besmirch anyone but by the same token this forum is dedicated to inform prospective buyers of questionable practices. I feel a little disappointed.

Anybody know if I send it to Spyderco if they would inspect or replace the spring? Charges?

I think the best idea would be to contact Spyderco directly and if they won't make it right, reverse the deal and hunt for a new ocelot elsewhere.

NIB is a fairly well, time established phrase, ANY signs of pocket carry and use, i.e. clip wear, sharpening...Etc. is not NIB to me.

It ain't a deal until BOTH folks are happy.
