Need opinion on pic quality

George i too think the second Pic you took looks great! now change your avatar to that and my eyes will thank you! :D :p

I.G. Try an outside afternoon or early morning shot (3:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. or so). Slightly overcast is even better, cuts down on harsh shadows.

the sun is a great light source. I think your indoor light might be too bright , hence the washed out colors.

Also try moving your point of view more foward, so you are looking down the blade slightly.

Erasers also work well for propping up knives. Cut them up in small shapes and wedge them under the knife.

Keep trying!

Yep!!! That sounds cool.  I think you should send me one of your skins from a de-nutted goat. HEHEHE!!! No thanks the horn smells bad enough. :barf:

I've been thinking about tannign a billygoat skin with the hair on, shampooed of course :D think of how that knife would look with a goat horn in a goat hide sheath :)

A light box to cut the glare you have on the butt plate, change back to the second background and you'll have it.
The shiny spot on the butt hides the detail on the end.

the background is still too light. Another problem is that it's very "clear". The background should "fade away" and become unnoticable - will draw attention back to the knife.

The knife appears "flat" and "dull" (in photog terms) - not enough contrast. I've had this problem with other knives I've photographed. Best way to solve it is to prop it up a bit like Ed Caffrey says, get a medium-gray/green/blue colored background and (if you have it) switch your camera to portrait mode.

Do you have a tripod? If so, mount the camera a little farther back (10-15 inches) and zoom in on the knife. That will help with the contrast too.

I know this probably doesn't make sense "why", but it does work.

Thanks Dan. Where have you been hiding????? :D I as using the a/sm mode what ever that is.

LOL...:D

Ok. I looked at your camera online.....here's what I'd do:

1. set ISO to 100 or 200 (100 = better, if you have enough light)
2. use a tripod, and use the timer = no camera shake/blurry shots
3. set white balance to "auto"
4. set exposure mode to "aperture priority" and if it lets you, set it somewhere between 4 - 6.7
5. use Fine 1280x960 mode.

Add this to what I posted the first time and try again. Keep posting the pics.....good to see the progress.

I'll have to try using my 7.2 Mpx cam, I've so far just been using the 4 presets and adjusting the indoor/outdoor toggle :P Have to empty the memory card first tho... and I ain't been to town for a couple of weeks :X
