Need Opinions on my Final 8 EDC...

At this point, I don’t think you can lose no matter which you choose. Worst case scenario, you don’t like the knife as much as you thought and you sell it here on the forums. You’d probably lose $20, but gain a bit of knowledge about what you don’t like.

Seems like a bargain to me.

Spyderco Lil’ Native. Look into it. It’s a great little big knife.

The Lil' Native is another great suggestion! It's a small knife, but I think it punches well above it's weight class. It has the added bonus of being easily modified into a front-flipper for some sweet fidgeting, lol

To be honest, after remember how large the Kershaw Payout (sent to me by mistake) felt in my hand/pocket, I would almost take both the regular Griptilian and the Manix 2 off my initial list of 8 and put the Spyderco Native 5 on the list.

I've got a Dragonfly 2 so it sort of covers that smaller EDC (similar to the Lil' Native), but the regular size Native 5 looks awesome as well.

Thanks for the advice!

If you can go to a store, or several stores, and handle some of these knives you’ll know almost immediately which one feels right in your hand and pocket. There are no real losers in your group. It’s down to a matter of personal preference.

Am I correct in believing that out of the Para 3LW, Native 5LW, Sage 5, Bugout, Mini Bugout, Mini Grip, and Mini Presidio...all of them are deep pocket carry except for the Native 5 and the Mini Grip?

How important should a deep carry clip be (I'm carrying in an urban/small city area)?

Also, one of the Native 5 options ($126 model) comes with the CPM-SPY27 steel...how does that compare to the S30V steel?

I appreciate all of the input and the honest advice!

I was stoked when I saw you had things narrowed down....and then I saw you were deciding between 8 knives. That's not narrow at all! ;)

For me, an axis-lock hater, the brand choice is simple. And as for which Spyderco to get, the Para 3 absolutely garners my vote. It just has too many things going for it. An awesome all-arounder.

Of that list, Manix in S30v or Griptilian. Probably the Griptilian because it will last forever and I think BM does better HT on S30v.

Manix 2 is a awesome knife, alot of fun and dependable.
You may also want to consider the Spyderco Delica in k390 steel.

Enjoy

The Benchmade Bugout is IMHO the quintessential EDC knife. Sure, you can flex it but unless you’re doing some serious prying with it that won’t be an issue. It is light, has a great blade shape, nice and thin, cuts like a dream.

I like it so much I bought a G10 one in M4 from the custom shop.

But in any case, the basic plastic handled version is fantastic... some people get caught up in titanium or copper aftermarket scales and that’s sort of like tying dumbbells to a kite. It’s designed to be lightweight so I don’t mess with that stuff.

Edited to add: I get the marketing gimmick in naming it “Bugout” but I think this knife should’ve been named the Benchmade “EDC”.

Heck, when you search for a folding knife on a certain knife seller website you get 8,192 knives to choose from - in my eyes I've already eliminated 8,184 knives! :D:D:D

That's an absolutely beautiful knife in the dark teal color! The concern I'd have with that knife is that my 13 year old son would steal it from me since it's his favorite color (but at least he'd give me my Rat 2 back). How does that K390 compare to the S30V?

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas!

The k390 is amazing
I was using k390 to shave wood to repair some cabinets.
I can't even tell I used the knife afterwards!

K390 can rust so I did a forced patina on my knife. I haven't needed to sharpen it yet.
I've read it's not difficult to sharpen.

I can tell you the delica is a fantastic knife to carry.
I usually prefer a larger knife, the delica has never made me feel like I'm missing something.

Enjoy !

I can only afford it with the BD1N steel - it seems out of all the knives I'm considering it is the only one that doesn't come with the S30V (in my price range)...should this be a concern or something that should make me think twice about choosing this knife?

Manix 2 is a awesome knife, alot of fun and dependable.

In looking at the Manix 2, the FRCP BD1 weighs 2.85 ounces while the G10 S30V weighs 5.0 ounces (according to a website). Do the S30V and G10 handle add that much weight? Worries me just a bit because I think my Cryo is heavier than it needs to be and I believe it's under 5 ounces.

Again, thanks for everyone's input!

- Spyderco Para 3 CTS-BD1N steel
I had a Para 3 when it first came out and ended up giving it away. When the Lightweight came out I grabbed one and it's a keeper. The LWT version fixes some of the problems I had with the G10 version (clip, lanyard hole placement, center of balance). Problem is, if I find myself wanting to carry a smaller Spyderco I grab one of my Chaparrals before the Para 3 every day that ends in a "y".
- Spyderco Manix 2 BD-1 or S30V steel
I have a couple of Manix versions...a lightweight and a G10. All iterations take up too much space in my pocket and never get carried. They live in a knife bag now.
- Spyderco Sage 5 CPM-S30V steel
I have a couple Sage versions...they can't kick a Native out of my pocket. Although the Sage 5 (which I don't have) is tempting with the Compression Lock. On a related note, Spyderco has really clouded the waters in the ~3" blade length market. Between the Para3, Native, Sage, Chappy, Delica they almost have TOO many choices!
- Benchmade Bugout S30V steel
Great knife, I have one. I prefer the Mini Bugout.
- Benchmade Mini Bugout S30V steel
IMO this is the Winner. The Mini Bugout is one of my all time favorites and spends a lot of time in my pocket. Find the one with white scales and do a Rit dye job on the handle to make it your own.
- Benchmade Griptilian S30V steel
Unless you're specifically going for the sheepsfoot version, you get a much better knife for a few dollars more with the Hogue Ritter series. It's hard to recommend a Grip with studs when the Hogue exists. That's a hard comment for me to make because I have many Grips in multiple configs that I love, but progress is a thing.
- Benchmade Mini Griptilian S30V steel
See above.
- Benchmade Mini Presidio II S30V steel
The Presidio never got enough of my attention away from a Mini Grip to try one. Its the only knife in this list that I don't own. I can't really offer a comment
I hope this helps, good luck!

Weight wise I really can't answer.
I have a manix 2 cv20 exclusive, I really don't mind the weight one way or the other.

The one I have feels really solid.
I can carry it iwb with sweats without issues.

I tend to go to BladeHQ for knife specs. I believe they physically measure and confirm each new model when it comes in. They show the FRCP Manix 2 at 3.00 ounces.

The big difference in weight is that I believe the G10 Manix has SS liners.

Out of the contenders, I’d go with :
1) BM Mini Presidio 2
2) BM Griptilian
3) BM Bugout or Mini Grip

I’ve grown fond knives with thumb studs as opposed to wider knives with holes. So BM is my preference here.

The hell with it; I’m going to recommend my EDC. I carry a blacked-out, combo edge Endura 4. It has VG-10 steel which holds a decent edge and is easy to sharpen. It’s a great all-around stainless option. The thing weighs less than 4 ounces and disappears into my pocket. It’s sabre ground, so it’s more stout than the flat ground Endura. It also features a back lock, which is my favourite locking mechanism.

I own several blades that are higher end and higher price, but somehow the E4 keeps getting picked up every morning. It’s held up to everything I’ve thrown at it so far. Also, if you look at the specs and it’s too big, try the Endela. It’s the size variant smaller than the Endura and larger than the Delica.
