Hi everyone. I'm looking for a present for a friend, something to get him (hopefully) into the world of quality knives.
I'm looking for a folder, something with a blade 3-4" in size, satin finish preferably...and with some really nice clean lines...and for the handle preferably no FRN or Zytel.. He's far more fashion conscious than I am.

Also, i'm looking to spend something like $50-$100..

I showed him some pics of the BM 750 Pinnacle and he thought it looked great (as do I). I haven't handled one though, so I can't exactly outrightly tell him its a great piece, although I don't doubt it. Any other recommendations? Perhaps in the Spydie line?

Thanks.

Wow...Are you in the market for any new friends :D ?

Benchmade 705/710
Cammillus EDC
OE Paragee

neetones,

If ya haven't already, you may want to go take a peek at A.G. Russell's website... www.agrussell.com You might find what you're looking for over there...

Is the Benchmade 940 in the price range? Axis lock, GREEN aluminum handles and a utility oriented blade shape. I have handled one and really liked it.

Benchmade 690

or

Kershaw Random Task

or

Kershaw Double Cross

or

Spyderco Frank Centofante Vesuvius

or

Spyderco Native or Native Lightweight

AG Russell has the Spyderco Jess Horn SS handled knife for $50. Very cool looking, much more so than the Pinnacle. I'm not usually a fan of SS handles, but this one looks so good!

Also, tho it does have FRN handles, I would think that the shell inlays would remove the Spyderco Vesuvius from the run of the mill FRN group. Very good looking, and has the new Compression lock.

If your friend is really fashion conscious, how about the Outdoor Edge Impulse? Aluminum and rubber inserts for grip, and still one of the coolest looking knives out there. A Darrel Ralph design. Supposedly they now come in a smaller size, I just can't find anyone who carries it.

I think they may be temporarily out of stock, buy Smoky Mountain Knife Works recently had the large Grey Ghost aluminum handled Mirage for $15. A pretty good knife for that, unfortunately, the blade is bead blasted.

Many more out there.

All of the knives I really want to recommend run just over your $100 limit. :D

In the range you're looking I would suggest the Camillus EDC in 154CM. Great design, well made knife, excellent steel, and a good price.

Clean lines, no FRN and under 100$: Spyderco SS Native and Spyderco Micarta Calypso or Calypso jr. BM colored leopards (discontinued but available) are quite nice looking too.

100$ is difficult limit as many good looking folders are just a couple $ above 100$ - even in cheapest internet stores.

I'd go for the Camillus 125th Anniversary Edition EDC. The knife is drop dead gorgeous, has 154CM steel, and very nice packaging. This is a sensational folder for the fashion conscious. I could go on about this knife all day, but let's just say that it's a "must have". CR Specialities has it for $89.95.

wow. thanks alot for your replies guys...

I actually have a 154CM Cuda EDC and am not very impressed. After spending a little time cutting paper (!) and some light sharpening, the blade has a terrible amount of horizontal play and when closed it is so off center that it's touching one of the liners. Hopefully I can get this resolved pretty soon though.

I'm continually amazed by the glowing reports of the BM 710. Is this because it was the first axis lock, or is the 710 something unique in the axis lock lineup?
thanks...keep em coming.

Wow! I like that EDC, Buzzbait. You might want to get that knife for your friend. If not, I'm partial to the Pinnacle. And the Spyderco Rookie and Worker, both in SS, are certainly worth checking out.

Then go with the BM940. It's the perfect size for everyday cutting needs. Though I must say, that 125th Anniverary EDC is very nice.

Good luck in your search. :D

The Anniversary Edition EDCs appear to have undergone a little more QC inspection than the other standard and 154CM models. The ones I've had a chance to see in person all had perfect lock-up, very little blade play, and the blades were dead center in the handle. I'd take the chance.

Even if you got the one single bad knife in the bunch, Will Fennell would take care of the problem in a heart beat. Will is a sensational Camillus rep, and will go positively miles out of his way to please a customer.

You can get a Spyderco Wegner or Military in that price range if you look hard enough. They are both great looking knives that function as well as they look.

Try looking at Bayou Lafourche Knifeworks website. Go to http://64.49.193.154/store.asp

They are having some great, outstanding specials on Benchmade 940's.

You might also consider getting a medium or large CRKT S-2. It has ATS34 steel and titanium handles with a framelock. I think it is a little sexier than the Pinnacle, but I have to say that the blade shape is less all-purpose than the Pinnacle. The good side is that unlike many other CRKT knives, they managed to keep their wretched bead-blast down to more of a "frost" finish, so it is more like a "satin" finish than any of their other knives.

Fashionable,Spydie plain edged Howard Viele fits the bill.I had one and fit and finish were superb.BM-940 also is a decent choice.I would definately do some on-line window shopping.Prices are good at www.888knivesrus.com and www.Knifeoutlet.com
I've ordered from both dealers and service is very good.good luck
