Need recommendations for a friend's first real knife.

i would go with the spydie calypso jr. with micarta handle i have one with zytel, which since you didnt want zytel i cannot recomend that. i absolutely love the vg-10 blade and it gets razor sharp, holds and edge and cuts very nice. it is also not an expensive knife i can honestly say that it is one of the few things in life that you will get more out of it than you paid for it

Do they offer the Calypso Jr. Ltwt with both micarta AND VG-10? If so, i'm on it. I'm thinking of just getting one for myself, I could use a new EDC.

Buy it used...low risk so he can decide for himself, over time, what he really likes:

BM AFCK 812 or 800
BM 705 or 710
Spydie Wegner
Spydie Starmate

Sorry to hear that you got a bad one! I have been quite pleased with the quality of mine. It has a smooth action, well-centered blade, and it is rock-solid when locked.

BM 940...Attractive looking knife, Colored Aluminium handles, Proven Axis lock plus that crazy reverse tanto style blade. Your buddy would love it.
Check out Bayou Lafourche Knifeworks.
Cheers,
Gord.
