Here’s a chance for everybody to put their thinking caps on. :) I’m looking to do some comparison testing with my new Jack Wolf Scuffle, so I apologize up front if these requirements seem annoyingly specific. Generally what I’m looking for is a not ridiculously expensive ($500 or below) midtech or production folder that meets the following parameters:

- blade length: 3 to 4 inches, ideally greater than 3.5.
- hollow ground blade
- relatively thin behind the edge bevel
- manufactured by an outfit that has a reputation for good, consistent heat treating
- heat treatments that favor the higher end of the acceptable hardness range
- blade crafted from one of the following steels: Cruwear, CPM-10V/K390, CPM-4V, CPM-3V, Rex 45 or Magnacut
- New or used is fine
- Ready availability is obviously a plus

The hollow grind and the blade steel are the two most non-negotiable requirements. I have a Magnacut Sebenza which comes pretty close, so no need to suggest that one. What are some others out there that I might be missing?

Hinderer has starting making hollow ground blades in MagnaCut. I know there's a Skinny Hollow Slicer XM-18 3.5, and I own a Skinny Hollow Eklipse 3.5.

Buck 110 custom shop in Magnacut checks all your parameters.

Hinderer has starting making hollow ground blades in MagnaCut. I know there's a Skinny Hollow Slicer XM-18 3.5, and I own a Skinny Hollow Eklipse 3.5.

These two are definite contenders. Thanks, gents.

It looks like Hinderer runs his Magnacut between 60 and 61, while Buck shoots for 61.5 to 63.

I see Neeve Knives had a model called the Misdemeanor in K390 which would have been perfect, but it no longer appears to be in production.

I own a couple of swaybacks and some Hinders and the swayback will cut much better than the Hinderers just based on blade geometry. The swaybacks are discontinued and the used ones are a great price right now (under $200). If you ever wanted one now is a good time to get one. I understand it might not be the blade steel you want.

How would you characterize the depth of the hollow grind on your Eklipse? I realize that’s a highly subjective question, but I’m just trying to get a general feel for whether Hinderer prefers a really pronounced, deep grind, or something more subtle.

Thanks for the info, jjg. I appreciate the detail on the Swayback. Unfortunately, the blade steel is critical to what I’m trying to do.

I immediately thought about Buck first ....

Other than Hinderer (hollow ground is pretty flat), you could find one of the Chris Reeve fixed blades in Magnacut, like the Backpacker or Nyala.

Hollow ground and your steel selection makes it difficult.

If you are OK with BD1N, there is the Spyderco Ronin. Should be a good baseline and cheaper than the other knives mentioned.

CRK 'Inyoni' is a 3.77" hollow-ground blade, Magnacut. And I can attest that mine is a slicey mofo.

I figured it would be a challenging request. :) Fortunately, we are surrounded here by the most knowledgeable minds in the cutlery game.

Thanks for the insight on Hinderer’s hollow grinds. I’ve never had a Hinderer, so my frame of reference is zero. Would you surmise that, even for a knife marketed as a hollow slicer, the XM is likely to be a bit on the thicker side behind the edge?

Am I being stupid here and not "gettng it" ?

I think you just describe a Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2 .

PS : I have two ; one stock (maybe reprofiled a little to even thinner behind the edge to be honest) .

One I totally reground the blade thinner ; 1.9 mm at the spine and about .009 " behind the edge .
Funny thing . . . at those specs the wonderful hollow grind disappears entirely .
just saying .
= I've never been a fan of hollow grind ; just thin grind . (for my tame uses) .

PPS : I once said here years ago : What's the big deal about the GB 2 ?! just go with the GB 1 (I have that also)
Now that I have the GB 2 I retract all that and have to say it is one of the best knives in my collection ! ! ! (I mean I bought two and put all that work ((for this amateur)) into hot rodding one of them so I must love them and I do .
