Need "Sharpend pry bar" folder

My PocketWrench will holds its edge a lot longer than your Strider. :p

.......what I found as the manufacturer's website fails to list an "edge" as a feature!?!?

Come to think of it, I might go out and get a prybar and then put an edge on it with the Edge-Pro. I'll have the best of both worlds!

Conceptually speaking, if you're seriously hammering your knives that damn much, I wouldn't waste my money on an expensive knife of any sort. ANY knife is gonna break eventually with that much day to day abuse. a Strider, ER, Chinook, or whatever might take a little longer to break...okay...alot longer...but you will break or damage it, and no matter how much you growl and say to yourself "I BOUGHT THIS HERE DAMN KNIFE FER USIN', NOT LOOKIN' PURTY!!!" It still hurts like hell when you break the tip off, or put a huge gouge in the blade of your expensive knife.

So my suggestions are as follows:

#1 buy a small pry bar or even a Craftsman Screwdriver. I hate to agree with anything The Tourist says, but he's spot on about the Craftsman Warranty. Even without the "still covered under retarded and psychotic abuse" warranty from sears a chisel, screw driver, or small prybar is still pretty damn cheap to replace. A small prybar, or screwdriver carried along with a non-overbuilt knife probably wouldn't weigh any more than the monster knife by itself.

#2 If ya' jus' GOTSTA have that knife, at least carry a fixed blade. I know the debate about locks an' all it a whole heap of fun, but one tends to lose interest where the rubber hits the road an' thier precious lil' fingies are at stake. I believe it was Ethan Becker who stated that a folder aint nuthin' but a pre-broken knife.
Incidentally a BK-11 might be a consideration in this category. Or even a CRKT Stiff Kiss, or a CRKT ABC. 'specially the Stiff Kiss. Not bomb proof, but at $20, what the hell? and that Chisel Ground Tanto can take some damn serious abuse you wouldn't wanna heap on a knife you love. (personal experience there) An Assault Shaker, or one of the small fixed blades from TOPS might fit the bill well also. On a bit larger scale would be the old Busse Basic #3's and such, they still float around. If you don't mind a slightly funky looking blade and a tiny bit of a learning curve there's the HI Bilton out there. it IS damn near bombproof and cheap as hell.($35)
And who can forget the various Tantos out there from Cold Steel, eh? There's also the MOD Razorback...primarily a SD knife, but it is damn stout...

#3 if'n yer gonna use a folder anyways, use up the one you got first. It might surprise you. I gave a friend of mine whos still in the construction business an M-16 that he's used the piss outta, and it still keeps tickin'. Not as much as he abuses the $5 China piece of crap I also gave 'im, but it does see it's share of abuse. For a knife that's gonna get dinged up, chipped up broken, etc. you might as well save a few bucks and keep with the M-16's. Finish murdering the one you've got, and then write up a big professional sounding review with a Thesaurus and stuff about how much you MEANT to inflict that much damage on a knife, in the interest of science....:D
Outside of that suggestion The ER's, TOPS 747s, Buck Striders, Striders, etc. are probably all good suggestions. I'd be hesitant to use the Chinook in that scenario myself, but that's just preference I reckon.

Let us know what ya' get, and how it works out, eh? Sounds like ya' oughta have some fun with it anyways....:D

Have you considered a CRKT Nealy Pesh Kabz? That fat tip has gotta be good for prying. Very inexpensive and practically free in comparison to a Strider or ER.

How about a balisong. I'm sure you could get a bit more leverage with one if necessary. Don't have to worry about a lock failing. Bali's tend to have thicker blades in comparison to regular folders.

Just a thought.

Knives make poor prybars. Folders make terrible prybars. It isn't the blade that's the problem, although tips tend to be more delicate, of course. It's the pivot. One reason the Striders, Buck/Striders, Extrema Ratio can handle more than the ordinary pocket knife is the massive pivots on them and their precision manufacture.

That's still no reason to try to destroy a few hundred dollars worth of equipment for lack of a few dollars worth of PocketWrench. Pry once or twice with any knife and you're fine, but keep it up and you will weaken and bend and eventually break the moving parts.

Really?

The BM 42 that I have has quite a thin blade, and I would never use it for anything resembling prying unless I absolutely had to.

The blade on my Strider GB, by comparison, is probably 1-2 mm thicker (at least) than my BM bali. Could be more, but I'm too lazy to get the bali out, pull out my GB from my waistband and compare. 1-2 mm is a lot when talking about blade thickness.

No kidding?

You know, I went to go look for that pocket wrench of mine after I was reminded by this thread that I own one, and I can't seem to find it....

My Tac GB is only unsupervised at night, but I am a heavy sleeper.... Maybe its like me and gets the late-night munchies too... :D :D :D
