Need small EDC with DEEP Pocket Clip

Flash I and Small Vantage are the only two I can think of that fit your specs. Unless you're really opposed to the thumb hole, the Spyderco Dragonfly2 is also worth a look.

Here's a Flash I next to a Small Vantage for comparison:

Thanks for the comparison, they are both what I want dimension-wise. I can get them both for the same price where I am, but I think I would go with the Vantage just to try a manual flipper instead of an assisted opener again.

But there has to be more than just these two knives that fulfill my requirements, right?

Don't know if it works for you, OP, but the Mini-Griptilian can be fitted with Benchmade's deep pocket clip. They send me two at no charge, one for the Mini and the other for my fullsize Grip. The Mini seems to have gone up in price since I bought mine but it's a helluva good knife.

If you like Gerber. The Gerber Instant is deep carry with G10 so its fairly light. Also the assisted opener is wicked fast. I like the lock mechanism on it as well. If you like Kershaw, the Leek might be for you. Not the deepest carry but everything else is spot-on. I also have a nice KBAR Dozier that is REALLY light but it is also not very deep. The deepest carrying knife I own is the SOG Trident. Now that thing is also light with a hell-of-a blade. Check it out, you might like that one.

I'm going to provide a bunch of options because your wants are super specific and some have all the requirements, others are missing one. You can go through them and figure out what's best for you.

Ones that match all of the requirements:
Buck Bucklite Max
Buck Revel
SOG Mini Trident

If you reconsider the opening hole:
Spyderco UKPK - BD-1 Steel, Leaf or Drop Point, Choice of color, deep carry clip, slip it, etc.
Spyderco Dragonfly - VG-10 steel, a little smaller than the UKPK, Now comes in black, pink, and orange. If you could drop like, less than $15 more over your budget, I would say to get the British Racing Green and ZDP-189 version.
Spyderco Squeak - Small little slipit with a lot of cutting power.
Spyderco Pingo - Same as above. Though this one doesn't really have an opening hole.
Byrd Tern
Spyderco Cat
Spyderco Chicago

I see a few other options out there that meet every spec but the tip up clip.
If you want those options
:
Boker Anti-Grav or Anti-MC
Boker Elegance
Buck Parallex 2.3
Buck Parallex 2.8
CRKT Klecker NIRK NOVO
CRKT HUG 2

Good luck!

Thanks for such a comprehensive list - I appreciate all of your suggestions. I took a look at all the knives you put forth and some of them come pretty close to what I want. The Bucklite Max interested me, but unfortunately the pocket clip is on the wrong side for me and is non removable. The Revel looked pretty good as well, however I'm afraid the design is a bit too outlandish. As for the Mini Trident - I already have one! I love it as a camping/hiking knife, but it is too bulky when closed for me to EDC it.

The results of this thread have confirmed what I knew in the back of my mind all along: that SOG Flash I is in a class of its own. At 1.3 oz, flat ground blade, assisted open, and perfect pocket clip, there are those reasons and more that made me keep going back to it. The pain I felt after losing one always made me feel like I wanted something else instead, but I don't think anything can replace the Flash I in quite the same way. Thus, I will probably just stick with what I know works for me and go with another Flash I. I appreciate all the input anyway; it still helped me make a decision.

A bit over your weight criteria, OP, but check out the Boker Plus Hyper or Trance. Both are excellent designs by Chad Los Banos...

Good luck! :)

I know you want a deep clip on your knife, but have you considered a knife with no clip. That is about as deep as you can get, and will not wear out your pants pocket. I carry an Opinel #6 which weighs nearly nothing. If I don't feel for it, I would think I didn't have it with me. Cost is less than $25, and comes scarry sharp (well I did have to strop mine on my pants leg to remove a small burr). I have several other knives I could carry, but the Opinel answers all my knife requirements. I can sharpen it on a coffee cup bottom if I am away from home, and can pull it out in a restaurant without causing an uproar. Best knife I have ever owned for general utilitarian purposes. If I loose it, It just gives me an excuse to buy another without breaking the bank. My present one is just over a year old, and I have only had to re-sharpen once. All it usually needs is a good stropping to bring it back to a very sharp state. Your uses may be different, so the Opinel may not work for you, but for the price you could try one, you might like it!

Blessings,

Omar

is there no one out there with the small Skorpion?
It's over $50, though not by much. :o

I just looked it up, though, and I'm curious... what's a Featherlite Steel Handle? Rather than have two stainless steel slabs, do you hollow out the insides?

Why are you stressing on the deep carry? I carry a DDR from knifekits every day both at work and home and have never had an issue from anyone.

The Kershaw Cryo is a really great knife and it's only $30.

i know you nixed this knifealready, but i like it. do try to check it out. i am a small guy at 5'7" 150lbs but i don't find the knife heavy for EDC.

It's just what I'm used to. The first knife I ever bought was the Flash I, by random chance. Since then I carried it pretty much every day for the last 4-5 years. The blade is a tad small, but is fine for most utility tasks. I just love how the knife becomes invisible especially when tucked into the waistband, with the clip tucked behind a belt loop.

I've been frisked by guards probably about 10 times while I'm forgetfully carrying the Flash, and never once did they detect it. Not that I'm carrying it into security areas or planning trouble, just that I'll go to a club or bar and forget that I have it on me since it's basically part of my person. It's these reasons why I find the deep clip indispensable.

So, to conclude this thread, I'm getting another Flash I. Nothing can come close to replacing it for my EDC purposes.

However, this thread had an unexpected side effect on me... I'm now interested in the Mini Griptilian. I guess as an outdoor & camp folder? I'll find a role for it afterwards - the point is I want one! Hehe
At the risk of straying a bit off-topic, is the Doug Ritter version significantly better than the normal 556?
