The Tops xc est alpha looks as if they made it to be super strong, as in a spear head. The primary grind doesn't even start till less than an inch from the edge. IMO, that knife would be a strong spear, but not a good cutting tool.
I have a Nessmuk that's 3/16" thick, and about the same length. The grind on mine is thinner and yet I don't think it cuts as well as other 3/16" thick knives. The ESEE 4 or the Bark River STS-3 have much better grinds, for cutting, if you really like a 3/16" blade. I don't even think that TOPS would baton as well as the ESEE4, it's a full flat grind so it just keeps penetrating. I suspect that TOPS alpha would get jammed in more often, when batoning.
I admit I do like the profile, as far as looks, and if it were thinner, maybe that grind would work.
