Need some advice about a collapsible baton

I have a 16" ASP Federal, very good baton :) However, if I was going to carry one when running/biking, make sure it is a Airweight. Yes, people have had issues with them bending, but honestly, hopefully you never have to use it. If you want to train with it, just use a 16" wooden dowel.

However, sounds like you would be best served by buying a good flashlight and some pepperspray :)

The LEOs at my old academy who favored the Airweight ASP would do heavy bag work with an all-steel ASP and mostly non-impact training with their Airweight. Several LEOs preferred the Monadnock Autolock in a 26 incher.

I order the Maxpedition Universal Belt Sheath and a 5" Tube sheath. They should be here be the end of the week. Both can be carried horizontal. So I'll drop and not back in this thread when they arrive and let you know what works and what doesn't. I'm really hoping that 5" tube sheath will work for the 16" asp. It says it has a max depth closed of 6.25". That's exactly the length of the 16" asp closed. So we'll see how exactly Maxpedition measures their pouch limits.

On a side not for the OP. I see a lot of people suggesting the airweight. In the 16" I would strongly urge you to get the full steel model. It's very short and you really need the extra weight to do any real striking. I mean let's be realistic. You don't want to have to use the thing but if you do you want it to hurt. I can see the airweights being of use in the 26" lengths because of speed. But that 16" is barely heavy enough in the full steel version. But it's pleanty fast as it is. I'd feel less secure with the airweight. Not sure if it would have any where near the impact the steel model would in such a small pacakge. God forbid I ever have to use mine, but if I do I want it to break an arm, collar bone, or knee in one whack to keep me safe. Get some training on how to use on of these also. And never hit someone in the head unless you're aim is to kill them. The right blow to the head with one of these can be fatal.

At my academy we trained a lot of escrima/kali. Our rattan sticks were generally around 26-30 inches so the guys tended to favor collapsible batons in that range.

Ok guys, I got my two Maxpedition pouches in today and have looked them over and tried them out.

5" Tube Sheath SKU: 1431 in Black

The 5" Tube sheath absolutely will fit a 16" ASP perfectly. All of the velcro in the closure flap makes contact with the pouch. By about 1/8th of an inch if you really stretch it. And with time this pouch will stretch out with wear and will fit even better. However it really can only be carried vertically. The PALS on the back aren't wide enough to fit even a 1" belt through. They are apparently only large enough to fit one of Maxpeditions Tac Ties. The Vertical loop is very generous and could fit a 3" web belt if you needed it to. More than likely made a little extra wide so that it can have a 2" web belt with chunky side release buckle pushed through it. I do however have some Velcro "One Wrap" at the house in two inch so I think I can probably rig it to carry horizontal. It is the better fitting and lowest profile pouch of the two I got.

Universal Flashlight/Baton Sheath (UFBS) SKU: 1708 in OD Green

Even though the other sheath fits this ASP perfectly, the UFBS is a great sheath in it's own right. It can be adjusted to carry up to a D-Cell Mag Lite. And the retention strap across the front really helps you get a tight fit. If you carefully close the sheath around the ASP so that the bottom is tighter than the top, there really is no danger of the ASP falling out except under extreme conditions. My only fear is that under the wrong conditions the baton may open accidentally and the absence of a bottom wouldn't prevent that. I am going to use that same velcro "One Wrap" to try and create a bottom for this pouch should I not like how the 5" Tube Sheath Carries horizontally. Should be easy enough to do. But with the grippy texture of the ASP Foam handle (YMMV with the plastic handled batons) and this sheaths ability to cinch down really snug, I don't think the baton falling out is gonna be a problem. IMHO this would make a far better flashlight holster than a baton holster though. But it would do that well. On the back there are multiple carry options from horizontal and vertical on both a 2" belt or Molle PALS. Good sheath all around and worth looking at.

Edit: In case anyone was wondering, the cinch strap that goes around the sheath is not elastice. It is very tough nylon with velcro on one side. I thought in the pictures it would be that elastic like that on the 5" tube sheath. But it isn't.

Well simple enough.

You carry a basic set of on board tools for your MC dont you. Crescent wrenches are recognized tools you need to carry 2 so thong them together through their rings this assures that they wont fall away.

Oh ever see the movie Enter The Dragon?
