hey everybody..
i need some anti-scale for the pocket knife blade i am working on. is there something i might have on hand that will do the job? i normally use a little bit of satinite on the surface and that cuts down on scale.. but something that would eliminate scale would be nice.

should i just break down and get some anti-scale stuff?

please advise.. can i get it locally?
thanks
~chris

Hi Chris, you can go here for PBC http://www.rosemill.com/product.asp?productid=258463

or here for smaller ammounts http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1122&title=NON-SCALING COMPOUND

or, our very own TracyMickley at USA Knifemaker Supply has it. I think his is the higher heat capable "PBC Special" http://www.usaknifemaker.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=57&products_id=650

There is also a wet version of PBC that I haven't tried yet. According to those who have, it works very well.

Can't really tell you how well satanite works at preventing scale. It works great for doing Hamon though.
You've obviously already figured that out ;) :D And darn near perfected it ...... IMHO

thanks david!
the satinite doesnt keep the blade from scaling.. but decreases the amount. i think i am gonna try and track down some of the wet anti-scale stuff.

i appreciate the kinda words about my hamons.. but when i can make hamons like Don Fogg, or Walter Sorrells or Don Hanson III or Rick Barrett.. i will agree with you.
*grins*
thanks!

I have been using the Brownells PCB powder and it works pretty well. sometimes a little piece can flake off and you have a booger on your blade. I just got some of the liquid, but i haven't used it yet. I plan to try spraying it. I have heard some folks say that works best.

Chris, check out this anti-scale compound that Brownell's also carries made by ATP:

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=23076&st=anti-scale&s=

Works great, and I got some on Don's recomendation. You can base coat with it and mix it with your satanite to make the stiffer clay. If you get some though, make sure you stir it regularly! Like weekly if not every time you go in your shop. The solids settle out over time and form a very hard to remix compound in the bottom. A non-Newtonian fluid I believe they are called, it resists abrupt penetration but the bristles of a paint brush just resting in it will sink right in.

i have some here that i dont think ill ever use its the pcb stuff. I got it from tim mickley if u just need some i can package you up maybe half of this pound and send it you r way . i used it a few times and didnt really like it just went back to grinding of the scale. now i dont worry about scale i just leave enough sacrifical metal to deal with it.shhot me a pm with you r adreess if u want a some of this, also free since it just collecting dust atm.Pete

Ive been using the ATP stuff for awhile and have great luck with it, like mentioned before keep it stirred well otherwise youll be using a bic ball point to stir with because a brush wont get it. You put it on very thin and make sure theres no bubbles and let air dry, if you put it on too thick it tends to crack and flake away as the heat ramps up. Ive used it on O1 and CPM154 and get pretty much no scale and it flakes right off when you quench in oil or plates.
