Hello all,

I am fairly new to the knife-buying world. I want to buy a great knife for my boyfriend's birthday. He likes to display them. I've looked through some catalogs he has and kind of focused on one , Master Cutlery. I am thinking a hunting knife or one something life Rambo III, with 11" blade.

The prices seem reasonable but I wonder if anyone has comments on the quality. If you have any pros or cons to share on Master Cutlery products please post. I hate to get something that is not the real thing or looks like a cheap imitation. He is a bit fussy on the knives he collects. And since this is a surprise, I can't very well ask him.

Any comments are welcomed.

Thank you....
;)

Master is made in China. If your boyfriend is a serious collector,he won't be thrilled.Though i'm sure he'll do his best to act that way!Master is actually not terrible quality, just not a lot of pride in ownership imho.

master cutlery rambo III, not so much.

there are many quality pieces that are both nice to display and will function well as users.

as mentioned, a price point would help.

and you are a great girlfriend for buying a knife for your boyfriend!!!

Check out Bark River knives HuntingGal... you will earn some serious "girlfriend points" by getting him a Barkie. What will he be using it for? Hunting knife? I'll suggest the Fox River or Gameskeeper. All around do everything knife? Look into the Canadian Special.

Well, some he uses..serious hunter....some he displays
I know he goes to gunshows and purchases..sometimes direct from the knifemaker at the show. He has a knife from the 1st Rambo movie and it is a beauty...on display. The problem is..I want to be sure that what I buy IS quality. So many pass off their wares as "authentic" and only authorized, certified. Not being really familiar with craftmanship, I want to be sure it is quality.

Price range...gee, probably something $600-$800 tops.

Thanks everyone for comments. Anxious to hear from anyone else who might shed light on this.

Be happy...go hunting !~

Something from Bark River or Fallkniven would be nice. They are both knives of excellent quality and are good users as well as attractive.

You can get a hell of a lot of knife in the $600-800 range.

Go to Knives Ship Free and/or DLT trading and look at some of the fancier Bark River knives. I prefer the more utilitarian models, but they do make ones with prettier handles. AND, they all are warranteed against anything but badger damage, so if you buy him a pretty one and he decides to use it, it's covered.

AG Russell has a Dozier-built Loveless drop point hunter that's just lovely... but it's also $895.

If he's like every guy I know who has a passion for something, what he'll appreciate the most is your telling him you'd like for him to pick out a knife he really wants, and that as a gift, you'll pay for it.

I know offering to pay for something probably isn't the kind of gift/surprise you had in mind, but trust me. The chances of your selecting what he truly desires are very slim, and if that happens and you give him something that wouldn't have been his choice, it's bound to be awkward.

Dozier makes great hunting knives. Check them out. Can get a nice one for around $250, and they are custom knives. Look up A. G. Russel, he carries them for immediate purchase.

You seem to be a fine girlfriend to some lucky guy.

Well... most knives ''nuts'' like ourselves are pretty picky on the knives they buy. Some love folders, some are more into fixed blades. Some like serrated edges, some can't stand them. Some buy their knives for all the history behind the design (Buck 110 for exemple), some buy them for ''bragging rights'' and prestige. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way but I don't think anyone that knows me very well (girlfriend, brother, parents) could buy me a knife that would make me happy. Even if its a 600$ knife. Unless they can remember a knife I showed them a knife I wanted on the web.

If you're really ready to spend that much money and want a knife that performs extremely well, has good looks (some might argue about that LOL) and a good reputation, I would look into Extrema Ratio knives.

Take a look at the Chris Reeve fixed blades. Chris Reeve has a very good reputation. They have outstanding customer service.
Their fixed blades knives run from about $200 to less than $500. Most are roughly around $300. They have several that have 9"
blades. Their new 6" Pacific is a good looking knife and sells for about $300.

Also, check the TNK site. Some CR knives are not shown on the CR site.

For that kind of money you should get him a couple of knives.
Hunting - Rat Cutlery RC-3
Camp - Ranger RD-9
Folder - Spyderco Manix (Lg model w/ plain edge) or Benchmade Dejavoo
High Dollar - Busse (any)
Machete - Ontario 18" or ColdSteel kukri machete
Inside Pocket - Vic. SAK w/ alox handles or Case stag handle Lg Stockman
Thats just an idea :D

Huntinggal, you can get him an excellent performing Bark river knife in A2 steel from between $90 to $130. Less if you look around. Unless you are really rich there is no real reason to spend 6 to 8 hundred dollars on a knife unless the guy is a serious collector. If he is the kind of guy that spends that much without doubt he'd want to select it himself. If he's just a hunter wanting a knife to clean his game there's no way you need to spend that much. Trust that a bark river knife, or a little more expensive Dozier is all that's necessessary. Joe

Huntinggal, listen carefully to the guys on BF recomend you asking your bf about what knife he would like to have. Listen even more carefully to those who tell you there is no need to spend that much in a knife...

Like everyone else here on BF I like knives... many of them... lots of them... but not ANY of them. Chances are that if someone gets me a knife as a present... and unless they go for a knife from a brand I already own (say Spyderco, RAT or Fallknieven...) they will probably screw up. I would keep the knife but I won't probably end up using it. Same goes with climbing equipment... I love to have presents like that, but as long as they ask me about what exact piece of gear I need. We tend to be that picky with the stuff we get.

I agree with Stewen Andrews and the knives he mentions... I can't afford to pay that much now for one but they sure look good. Unless your bf is all out for tactical stuff... I think that anyone can appreciate a Thor.

Mikel
