Need some help... 2.5" or less folder...

Now here's where things get exciting. I've done it, we've all done it; someone asks for something in this price range with this criteria and boom! There are extensive results. So let's see what kind of answers we can get...

I need (who of us really 'needs' a new blade?) a 2.5" or less folder. I LOVE the U2 and I know the price is well worth it but too much. Steel is a BIG deciding factor; I want something that I can scare the HELL out of the hair on my arm. A HIGH carbon, AUS8, or something along those lines. It also needs to lock and I'm not a big fan of traditional handle/scale materials. With that in mind HERE'S the kicker... 35-40 USD shipped. This might be asking too much for too little but we'll see. If you guys suggest something over limit (which I know you will  ) it'll at least let me think about saving up. Worst comes to worst someone could tell me somewhere to get a U2 for around 45 shipped. Let the games BEGIN!!!! :D

Great response and I love it but can't be any longer than 2.5", sorry I should have said so. I have a reservation against carrying a folder near the same size as my EDC fixed blade 3.5,and this little puppy I'm looking for has to be sheeple friendly. THANKS Knifeclerk, sorry to be so picky.

My next guess will be a Kershaw LFK. The blade is AUS6, though. But it's from Kai. You know it's better. Blade length is 2 1/8". Certainly within the price range.

I know I'm a bit biased, but I'd say a Spyderco Meerkat. AUS-6 steel, 2 inch blade, got a "non-traditional" handle, and cost from my personal supplier, Newgraham.com, $31.20. You might find something you like better, but I got my dad one for Christmas 2 years ago, he's put it through some very serious use, and it still works great. Hope this was of some help.

The Fallkniven will scare hair, but it takes some effort.
A first start is a diamond hone and THEN the Sharpmaker. Sorta like 100 or so strokes.
SGPS will take a scary edge....but it don't come easy.

It STAYS for a while though.

But the price is over 40

Maybe ..... Gillette???
:D

LOL on the gilette comment...wow that LFK looks great! Lanyard hole by chance? I've gotten a lanyard sickness lately and now all my blades and tools have this funny little piece of green cord hanging from them?! Anyway, I was also wondering if the thumb stud was ambi or not. Thanks a LOT!

You might be able to find a Moki Silver Feather for that price. Nice, all stainless gents folder. Lockback, with fit and finish so fine, you can barely tell where the spring meets the blade.

I'll second that Dragonfly. :) It's a great little knife. Now, admittedly, I have one with the carbon fiber handle (long out of production and that was very limited in the first place) but it's a very practical little knife and very non-scary looking. Spyderco has made quite a few knives in this size and price range. I have (and like) my Dragonfly and my SS-handled Pegasus (sadly also no longer made), but you should be able to get the Dragonfly in SS or FRN, the Jester or FRN Cricket at prices at or under your price point. Even the SS handled Kiwi is not much over what you are looking to pay and THAT is a very nice knife indeed for the price. (Of course, the U2 isn't much more than that either.) But for pure bang for the buck and a great cutter with non-threatening looks, it's very hard to beat the Dragonfly at a street price of around $30.

Good luck and have fun with your search,
Paul

Paul,
Got a pic of that CF Dragonfly? I hate the molded in clip on the FRN Dragonfly.
I was thinking that a CF Dragonfly would be perfect for me, unless spyderco makes a CF Kiwi, or a Jester with better steel (I love my regular Jester anyway). Or maybe a CF Kopa? Those SS knives are ok, but too heavy for a little knife in the pocket. Sorry, not to highjack.

I'm starting to veer towards the dragonfly, but I'm not sure about the integral pocket clip; any thoughts? Does anyone have them with a wire or metal pocket clip? Oh, and I.V., what's NGK? Thanks everyone! GREAT feedback!

WOW! The mini-pika looks great but it measures at 2.9...anyone had any experiences with this one? I may go over my limit for that one...what a deal!

ive carried mine for a few months heres my thoughts. the steel is great for the money, its got an adjustable blade pivot. Plus, unlike other lockbacks, the lock is really secure and has very little up down play. it has a smaller clip that rides low which is nice. Plus benchmades iron clad warranty that they are always gonna make good on (based on past experience). i really like mine a lot.

MINI PIKA it is!! Know anywhere to get it as cheap as I've been seeing it (about 25 smackers plus shipping) that's reputable. Thanks everyone for your input and hey, I haven't ordered it yet if anyone's got any better ideas!! ;)

Sorry, I don't. I suppose I could try to take a pic but I don't have one at this time. I'll see if I can get a chance to do that. I don't know if you could get hold of one anyway. I got mine a few years ago when Sal was clearing out the last few and Spark sold them off here at BFC. They went fast. :)

And I also apologize for the hijacking.

Paul
