I have had this big Kukri for years, but I honestly can't remember what model it is or which Kami made it. Can one of you wise HI nuts chime in? I know it's something special as I don't remember seeing many inlayed kukris out there. All help is appreciated!!

What do you recommend to maintain the handle? I know a lot of people swear by boiled linseed oil. Do you submerse the handle in it or dip it in the boiling oil? Please forgive me if this sounds stupid, but clearly no experience here. I can patina polish or wax anything but maintaining the handle has me stumped.

Thanks for the heads up everyone!! I have had the privilege of owning a few Bura pieces over the years. Clearly this one was a prize that I tucked away. Now if only I hadn't sold that Sher Bonecutter. Oh well.

I wouldn't dip the handle in anything hot (with or without plastic protection). The hot oil could melt the laha (natural epoxy) that holds the handle on the tang.

I can't tell for sure from the photo whether the handle is horn or wood. If it's horn, I recommend rubbing it with Hooflex (the paste-wax type, not the liquid). If it's wood, I recommend multiple coats of tung oil, rubbing well in between coats.

As far as I can tell the main difference in the two types of Hooflex is that the liquid version is messier. Perhaps easier to brush onto a horse's hoofs, which are relatively large and rough, but the paste version is easier to apply to a horn khukuri handle without making a mess. One container of paste Hooflex can last a lifetime.

Not sure if anybody done this already and hope this will come out OK. I just finished working on my Sirupati Wood Handle. After cleaning and sanding. I apply stain and varnish.
Try to insert picture but not letting me or I don't know, how do I insert pix..sorry. I did click the insert image but when click from my computer nothing happen?

You could upload the photos to a free hosting site like Photobucket, then copy and paste the resulting URL for the photo into the forum reply.

I think it's horn. I was originally looking into Ren wax. Does anyone endorse it for kukri use? How can I tell if it's horn versus wood? I am only asking as I feel like it's horn but the lighter portions resemble wood grain, normal?? My best guess would be rough finished buffalo horn.

That's strange, the right side I'd swear is horn but the left side I'd swear is wood. Guess I just swear a lot.

I think it's wood.

Ballistol or mineral oil works great on horn and not bad for wood either although I prefer multiple coats finger rubbed of linseed for wood.

26". I just looked at it again, I found some hairline cracks. It's gotta be horn. Ballistic I will order.

What do you guys do for the linseed oil? I know the new stuff is relatively cheap but is "boiled" with chemical treatments. Do you buy raw and boil it yourself?

007 Agent... how do you insert pictures on your thread???? I try to use the insert box but keep failing, it file too big now I follow guide lines now it's too small. ???? Please can you tell me how?
Thanks

Hey use that insert box like you are doing, but uncheck the "retrieve remote file" box
