An easy accurate way to determine is use two boards. One with a 6" 1/2" carriage and a nut. Another with a 5/8" hole. Now all you need is an accurate scale. Shipping, bathroom, etc . . .
Or a heavy fishing scale pulling the handle down would work.
I checked compression spring that way & found out later I was within 5% of stated value.

I would recomend a gas spring. They are much better, have longer travel and more consistent.
