Need some help with a blade......

I've been trying to get it together and start making knives...takes me awhile to get anything done. So now I've purchased a ground but not sharpened or finished blade from John Greco off of everyones favorite auction site. The blade is 6150 (?) steel but has a low hardness around 50RC. Can anyone give some advise on where I can get the blade rehardened to a higher RC. The knife is about 16 inches long and 5/16ths at the spine.

After this one is answered I'm going to have some other questions.

Thanks for your time,
Patrick

Not so sure but that's what Mr. Greco said. I take it 6150 is not something a blade would be made of? Again I'm working with the information I was provided with.......

I'm not going to go into the blade source.
6150 is a steel similar to chromium steel that would make a knife. It would ,however, not make a very good one. The carbon content is .50,+/- .003. There is about 8% chromium, making it wear resistant.
As far as the Rc50, that is low. You could have it re-hardened by a maker who does HT, but with the low carbon content, it may not get a lot harder. The quenchant is oil and the temp is 1600F.Temper at 400F.

Best thing to do is go ahead and make this knife. It will still be a workable camp knife. It will have to be resharpened more often, but that will not be a problem. On your next knife order a blade from a supplier like Darren Ellis, TKS, Sheffield, K&G, etc.

6150 is a Chromium vanadium steel, CV steels are excelent knife steels. They are better knife steels when you can get them with higher carbon.

With the added vanadium I don't think this blade would be any worse than 5160 steel. I am willing to bet 6150 can get at least 5 or 6 points higher hardness. That will make a big difference in edge holding.

Wayne Goddrd talks about making a big bowie out of 6150 in one of his books.

Thank you all for the information. I think I'm going to go ahead and finish the knife and if the present hardness proves too low tryand get it re-hardened at a later date.

Thanks again,
Patrick
