Need some help with buying a folder

The PM2, Manix, and Griptilian are all tried and true. I've owned the Spydercos and fondled the Grip (sold me on it), so you can't really go wrong with them. Consider that each one has a different lock type and handle.

I really appreciate all the input. I don't have to worry about scaring people with a knife in my line of work. I picked these because it seems like Benchmade and Spyderco come up in every folding knife conversation here. I like the axis lock and warranty on Benchmade and it seems Spyderco is a work horse. I prefer one handed operation but don't really need assisted. Autos are illegal in Washington State. I can walk down the street with a Katana on my back but a pocket knife is technically considered a concealed weapon. Go figure. I guess a couple hour road trip to Cabelas is in order. Thanks again everyone.

why the boat anchor Buck 110 has to be in every recommendation thread? Plus, compared to the knives that the OP listed, Buck 110 is just like a kershaw to a ZT.

OP - buy a spyderco PM2. You wont regret.

I think you have some good choices listed and it boils down to personal preference. They are all good knives. I however generally only recommend knives that I have owned and used. The Manix 2 is a little large for me.

I have the Mini Barrage (#585) which is assisted and I like it a lot. It comes very sharp from the factory and was flawless. I tend not to carry an AO a lot, but it's pretty easy to carry and finds it way into my pockets.

I'll add one for you possible consideration. Take a look at the Steel Will Cutjack whitch is a flipper and liner lock. I have the mini which has about a 3" blade and my preferred carry size. The regular Cutjack is larger and I assume it is as fine a knife as the Mini. My mini is in M390 with G-10 handles. Been carrying it everyday since I bought it a couple months ago and for me that is significant.

I have or had most of those knives, and I don't think you can go wrong with any. I am curious about the 560 Freek. It looks great, but I have not handled one. The Grip, or Manix would be my choice otherwise.

To the op, all of the knives you listed are good to go. No matter which one you choose, it's a good choice. With that said, only you can figure out which one is the best choice for you based on your needs and wants, what you'll do with it etc. Best thing to do is ask yourself what it will be used for. Look at your routine and narrow it down by use.

Here is my personal short synopsis for each knife, I have only used the PM2 and 551, so take the rest with a grain of salt.

Spyderco; known for great ergonomics and slicey FFG blades. Not necessarily great if you will use them really hard. Better off as knives, not an impromptu do all tool at the construction site.

Benchmade; Really fun knives with great actions because of the AXIS lock. They run a little beefier than Spyderco knives, but sacrifice cutting ability.

Manix 2; Is known for outstanding ergonomics that can be used for long periods of time in comfort. It also has a nice blade that will make short work of what you're cutting. Downsize is that it is a pocket hog, not in weight but in size. It has a ball bearing lock which is similar to the AXIS lock. Good for if you use your knife a lot.

BM Freek; Very similar to the 551, but with S30V and a higher grind. Ergonomics look a little better IMO. I would choose it over the Grip.

BM 551; A very tough knife that will serve you well. They have good ergonomics and a whole lot of jimping and texturing so you won't lose a grip on it, hence Griptilian. Not the best slicers but they cut.

PM2; One of the most popular Spyderco knives. Very light, great ergonomics, a thick stock blade that can still slice, however it has a fragile tip. It has the compression lock which is easy to manipulate and keeps your fingers out of the blade path.

BM 580; Is assisted opening, so unless you want AO I don't see a reason to consider it over the other knives.

The PM2 gets my vote, but that's just my opinion. Like I said earlier, only you can decide what is best for you.
