Hi guys,

I have been building knives now for a couple of years, but have been buying my blades online or at knife shows. I am now wanting to move on and start making my own blades. Just wandered if there was a site, or link somewhere that would let me know what all I need. I mainly need the big machines now, I think. I currently do everything by hand, when it comes to sanding and shaping. Any ideas on where to go?

Thanks,

Dave

Figures, as soon as I post this I find a real nice link. So what is your one tool that you suggest that you just couldn't do without. I'm guessing the sander, since I spend way to much time with a file in my hands. Any one sander out there that is preferred? Something that can do most anything you'll need. Thanks.

Dave

If you have the time and ability building your own 2 x 72" belt grinder is pretty cool. I built 2 belt sanders at work from mostly scrap and labor.
If you want to buy a good machine like a Bader or a like do a search there is plenty of posts of guys like you who have asked the same question.
Also if you could fill out your Bio. it would help us get to know somthing about your skill and if you are local to sombody who might help you.
Have a good Day!!!

Well for a start click on my site and get started. That will help in setting up your shop and seeing that you may need for yours. Knife Supplies, Steel, and more. Have a great day.

We keep telling all the Newbies to fill out thier profiles. Reason being you may live in the area of a knife maker that will help you. If you live near me I would help you to get started. :D

The only thing you end up needing is some type of belt sander.
The best is what they call "belt grinders like the 2"X72", but any type of power sander is better than nothing.

I know (in a way) you dont "need" to get a sander first, but I still think you do.
It will save so much time. Im so glad I got mine after attempting to go without for too long.
Attempting to make a hand made knife without a sander of some type is too hard for a new guy to learn on all by himself.

After you get your power sander, then there is no limit of the other toys that you will soon see the point in getting next.
but the starting place has to be with getting some type of sander. And there is no limit to the amount of questions you can ask here.
Asking questions is one of the best ways to learn how to do things.

I would say a belt sander, metal cutting band saw, and drill press. I purchased all of mine for a total of about 400 dollars. I want to upgrade my sander though. I only have a 4x36 currently. I will probably save for a 2x72
