Hey folks,
I'm sure somewhere along the way, we've all gotten something that didn't quite meet up to our expectations.
I just experienced this and just wanted to get some input as to whether I'm too harsh of a critic or have set unreasonable standards.
Below, I'm posting a description of a knife that I recently bought. I'll omit reference to the seller as I have not heard back yet. (It's only been 12 hours so that's not the problem here.)
I would ask that folks read it and post what kind of condition they would expect to find when they opened the box.
.It has been used a few times to cut tree limbs and sharpened a few times, other wise it is in excellant shape.$50 shipped.Looking for a 9" blade knife.
(Just to add for understanding, this was a brand and model of knife with a very good reputation for being tough. Steel was VG-10)

My concern is that I'm setting my expectations too high. I don't want to be unfair to the seller. As I've stated before, right now I do not have a beef with the seller as it is early in this deal, I just emailed him last night, and perhaps my expectations are too high here. This post is not to be considered a flame on them in any way but as an educational tool to increase my understanding of descriptions.
Thanks all.

Well Doc, to me the sharpened a "few times" would indicate a lot of use. If it was done properly or not is another story. To me theres a big difference between excellant condition and a user. So ask yourself..is it in A1 condition?;)

Jake,
That's where I'm in the hole here. "Sharpened a few times" and "Used to chop some wood". I guess Sharpening can be defined as removing metal from the edge in any way shape or form. Chopped some wood can be anythning from pruning a tree in the yard to splitin fire wood.
Hmmmmf.

Having used knives for limbing on many occasions, I would expect a few marks on the blade and quite possibly some dents in the edge. It would be very difficult for me to describe a knife that I had used to limb trees as being even remotely close to excellent condition. This is a task that tends to scar up a blade pretty heavily. I suppose that, otherwise in excellent shape, could mean that the handle looks great.

As far as the sharpening goes, this knife was most likely sharpened after each time it was used to limb trees. This is an activity that can dull a knife or damage an edge each time you do it.

So to answer you question, I would have expected a knife with some scarring on the blade and possibly some edge damage. Even though this knife was described as being in, otherwise excellent shape, I would have questioned the owner about what the limbing had done to the knife.

i would expect a used knife and not one anywhere near excewllent condition.....his description isnt cryptic....USED a few times....SHARPENED a few times

he has described a used but maybe not abused knife

I saw the knife in question today and I would agree with Feverdoc on his description. I would say it is in used not quite abused condition. There are a few dings in the blade, one in particular was rather large. And the sharpening was a little excessive, all I can say is it looks like too much material was removed. Like the past owner was trying to remove the convex edge and turn it into a normal V grind. Or not too experienced in sharpening a convex edge, it is real easy to goof a convex grind, I know first hand  But that is another story, for another time:o
My Two Cents

Here's the latest.
Upon reading some of the input here and looking the knife over a couple of times, I arrived at the decision to let this one be. Perhaps the description wasn't as detailed as I like, but, as the saying goes, I didn't ask either. This is a Fallkniven A-1 which, even in this shape can be turned out into a fine field using knife. At the $50 that I've got into it, that's still a good price in most folks book.
I swapped a couple of emails with the fellow who sold it to me and he proved himself to be an absolute gentleman to do business with. Right off the bat, he told me that he wanted me to be happy with the deal and that he would refund my $$ if I wasn't. I thought it over and kind of kicked myself for not looking at the bigger picture. It is still an A-1 for cheap and will give me good service for a long time.
I just want to take time to appologies to the other side of this deal here if I came off too hot on my initial emails. I've emailed him with the same appology but since I brought this topic here for advice, I figure I'd better put the ending to it here as well. My initial email was not rude but most likely pushed the evelope and got close. Sorry about that.
Enough rambling. Let me just thank everyone for there input, Jake, Feverdoc, and Kieth. Dwayne, thanks for looking it over this afternoon.
Hell of a learning experience if nothing else.
Doc:)
