Howdy guys, need some more help locating a 4x6x.5" piece of carbon fiber. I have a one off project that I need to get done and I don't need a whole sheet and am having a hard time finding a small chunk that thick. I would appriciate it if some one wouldn't mind parting with a peice, or give me a heads up on a location:)
thanks,
Jake Hoback

I think Blacksite carbon fiber had some .475 thick when I ordered about a week ago. They also had some at about 1.1 thick I think.

Well maybe not, the guy wants it to be at least .5" thick maybe more. having a hard time finding something that big. anybody else?:D

you could buy 2 pieces half as thick as you need and epoxy them together under some pressure. if they come clean and flat all you'll need to do is lightly sand them first.

Good idea, problem lies in the fact that I have to drill a bunch of holes in them and you will be able to see the 2 pieces joined together.

It won't show. It's already a bunch of layers. I would also wipe the faces down with some acetone after sanding to soften up the epoxy and clamp it as tightly as you possibly can when you glue it up.

only issue I can see with that is that if you don't cut some reliefes in the carbon the glue will not have a very good michanical bond and opon impact will come apart. Chemicals won't soften up carbon fiber if I'm not mistaken. I'll give it a go and try though.
Thanks
Jake

It depends on the resin. Epoxies aren't too bad at surface to surface bonds, but polyester is terrible. The purpose of the acetone wash is to remove some of the matrix resin on the surface in order to expose some of the fibers. Sanding with 60-100 grit does something similar. It cuts and raises some fibers so that the epoxy can grab onto them.

If all else fails there is a guy on the british knife forum that sells 15 mm (approx. 0.59) carbon fibre in any size you want. Of course there is an international shipping charge but I thought I mention it anyway.
