First I apologize if this is in the wrong place, I honestly tried to think of a better place and if wrong please move.

I am seriously thinking about going to the New York Knife Show at the end of next month. I need to sell some of my collection to fund, and already have one sold. My concern is I've never received a single penny through paypal. I've sent plenty but never had any sent to me. I have read some horror stories of people's money having holds placed of their money for up to 6 months, incase someone files a claim. Just trying to figure out if there is a way to use PayPal and get the money sooner. I can't risk having it tied up that long, it needs to be released by November 10th. I asked if he could use a money order but he said he's never used one in his life and he likes the paypal protection. Wouldn't he be protected with the money order also, as in mail fraud? I appreciate the help in advance. Any advice is appreciated. Have a great day

Been buying/selling on EBay for 14 years and using P.P. same amount of years never had a horror story.
If your item/s are problem/issue free.... There's no reason for a buyer to file a claim.

Thanks for the quick response brother. I probably worded it weirdly. My concern isn't him filing a claim, it's the ability to withdraw the funds into my bank account within a month so I can go to the show and spend the money.

that will not be a problem once he sends the money it is in your paypal account immediately, from there YOU send it to your bank. This process takes between 2-5 working days. as far as concerns about a claim take pictures...of the items condition at time of shipping, the package showing correct address and a tracking number. so paypal in itself will not be a issue...just make sure you either add the tracking number to ebay or use the built in ebay postage thing to print label and tracking number with out doing that ebay will not release funds until the item has been received which may take several more days...cham may be more familiar with this ebay function.

Thanks. It's a fellow bladeforoums person so eBay isn't involved but I think I've read about having problems if you don't use PayPal to print the shipping label. I would just go to the post office and mail it like I always do, I don't have any way that I know of to print labels. I wouldn't care if this wasn't a 500$ risk of being held. I wish the first run was a lower dollar knife.

It takes my bank no more than 3 business days to have my funds transfered and ready for me to do with what i want.

1. Been using for 10 years now without any major hassles
2. Buying and selling
3. 2-3 days to transfer back into my bank account
4. Only holds I have had are because the seller sent me an echeck and had to wait to clear or in the notes field a subjective word was used. (The word Condor had the funds held for 3 days). Holds have never been more then a week. And it was never my entire account. Just the transaction.
5. Be careful labeling things as knives. I think that is a new word restriction?

Thanks to all who have responded and helped with the newbie paypal questions. So would you guys say worst case scenario I would have the money in the bank in 2 weeks?

You don't 'have to' print it from the PC, only benefit is the tracking for first class is free that way.
If the knife is expensive, ship it 'registered'.

As soon as you see the funds as 'received' in your P.P. acct. You can transfer any amount of it to your personal bank acct. Of your choice, it then takes approximately three business days to clear give or take a day.
You'll have plenty of time to get your $ before next month's show!
I'm going too, I go every year.

You don't have to purchase postage through Paypal. If you are using the USPS, you can manually type in the tracking information from your receipt into the Paypal transaction. Also be sure to fully insure the package and get Signature Confirmation not the regular Delivery Confirmation. In order to immediately withdraw the funds ($$$ gets put into your account within 5 days) I believe you need to have a confirmed account with a bank account attached to it.

Get a PayPal debit card.

You can access your money as soon as it posts.

Thanks for all the help above. I really do appreciate it.

***NEW QUESTION***

How does it work with deposits? Let's say I'm selling a knife for 500$. The person wants to buy it but wants me to hold it for them. They say don't worry I'll put a deposit down. 100$ down, 400$ next week. Now is there a way to link the payments together? If not, wouldn't paypal look at that as 2 separate transactions? Then after you send them 1 item they could say that the 2nd item they paid for was never received and file a claim? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I can't really see any way to link them and I really don't know how it would work.

You really need to call PayPal directly and ask them all the questions and concerns you have.
They are completely knowledgeable and will give you all the answers.
The phone number is on the PayPal web site.

I've been using PP for many years also, never any problems. I always carry my packages that I sell to the post office and pay for the shipping there, then I just add tracking info to the transaction on PP, as long as you do that your good to go. Usually takes 3 to 4 days once you transfer the money to your personal bank account to get the money in there.

There was no hold you all were correct. Now I'm just curious how you guys handle a customer who wants to pay a deposit. And I emailed paypal both times before posting here, just looking for others opinions.
