I am working on two big hunting knives. I am worried that the tip of the blade will poke through the leather. Someone recommended putting a piece of kydex inside the sheath. I was wondering if there are other ideas on making a sheath for thes style knives. Thanks.

Sure you can use a kydex liner, nothing wrong with that, but if you put in a proper welt and design the sheath properly, it will never be an issue.I have never had a knife cut through, and I don't use kydex. The sheath should be designed so that the knife has very little play when sheathing and when seated.Cut thru's are usually the result of poorly made sheaths that allow the user to put the knife in at acute angles.Dave:)

Those knives lend themselves very nicely for stitching and a welt up both sides.

I'm not sure I really understand about the welt could you show some examples. I am new to knifemaking and even newer to leather. Thanks guys.

you could make it out of raw hide, make a secure inner sheath that looks ugly but holds very well, and then form the pouch around it embellish it and stitch it up. the raw hide is very tough and the 2 part construction prevents poke through. im not sure if i explained that very well...

Pnacho,
The local Tandy Leather guy calls it an English gusset. What I basically do is outline the blade profile in leather (covers the tip and the sharp pointy end) then you wrap your normal leather sheath around it. It’s a variation on what Legato1 is suggesting. I use it for sheathing kitchen knives for travel it keeps the blades and point from cutting the stitching and leather. Hopefully the attached picture will make some sense you basically sew an additional piece of leather into the sheath to protect the rest of the sheath from the point and the edge. It’s not as snug as just folding a piece of leather over and sewing it but it solves your primary concern of the tip sticking through.

I think I saw somewhere in an in progress thread that Paul Long did where he used JB Weld in the bottom of the sheath to prevent the tip from damaging the sheath. It was just a little bit though. Don't go overboard.

I was told to take a cd and use a heat gun to fold it and insert it into a sheath.....Just for the bottom.....He said it really works........carl

If the sheath is made properly you should wetform it so the knife lock-in or bottoms -out on the top of the handle slabs or guard. The tip of the knife should barely rest on the welt.

Listen to Dave he really knows what he is talking about. He makes some really great sheaths.

DC is right if you put in a good welt youll have no problem. I only have troubles with my filleting knives they sometimes are so pointy and sharp they will go right through the welt.

Big???? Heck them's just babby's compared to some I do - working on a 13.5" blade Bowie now and 8-12" is my norm....

Anyway like Dave said built right no problemo.......and like Ray said a welt up both sides........

What I would do: Butterfly style in 8/9 oz - here's what I'm talking about...
