need some sit-upon help...

I many times simply sit on my pack. Placed at the base of a tree gives me a backrest. Sounds simple and stupid, but it works.

Just reading through this thread and thinking of mailing something at the same time gave me an idea...

I bet you could make a pretty sturdy little knee/sit pad by stuffing one of those tyvek envelopes with bubble wrap or some other such cushioning. I think I'll have to try it out. It will weigh next to nothing and probably roll up pretty small.

Just a thought...

I can see you testing a prototype: you gingerly apply your weight to the seat, thinking all is well until your last ounce is deposited on the envelope... POP POP POP, you flail and fall backward as your seat explodes! :D

lol :D

I was actually picturing myself popping all of the little bubbles unconsciously as I was walking along the trail. Oh look, a tree. POP. And... another tree POP POP.

I probably wouldn't make it 100ft down the trail before every one of them was popped. Those things are addictive.

I use one of these.

Weighs next to nothing and fits nicely down the side of my pack.

I was going to suggest a section of z-lite pad (2-4 sections depending on how big you want it)-^ that appears to be a very similar product, w/o any cutting :)

You can go as expensive or as cheap as you want on this purchase. There are lots of options.

I just use a piece of USGI surplus sleeping pad that I cut to sit and kneel on. Roll it up and tie it under my pack. Got a piece for the dog too. He ain’t no dummy, he wants to sit his butt off the ground too. :D

I got a cheap foam sleeping pad, which i cut into sections.

Pacific Outdoors makes a inflatable sitting pad, just like the one from thermarest.

Or if you have an inflatable sleeping pad, you could get one of those slip-on things that converts it into a chair:

Same thing from Thermarest:

WalMart sells a cheap blue sleeping pad for $5. Could easily make 4-5 sitting / kneeling pads from one.

All those other stools and pads are either too expensive or take up too much room. My chunk of sleeping pad goes in the backpack(against my back to protect from items) and weighs almost nothing.
If I'm using it often I just bungee it on the outside of the pack.

Some of us are feeling the inevitable effects of age.
There comes a time in life when a good seat is worth it's weight in gold. :)

Last weekend I used a piece of foam that I snagged from a shipping crate before it went in to the compactor at work. It's about 2 feet square, maybe an eighth of an inch thick and folds up and tucks nicely between the hip belt and frame on my old school Kelty external frame pack. I don't know how long it'll hold up, but it worked very well for me on this trip, and the price was definitely right.

Most hunting departments in Wallyworld have a little self-inflating seat like a thermarest that is butt size. I can squeeze mine in the water bladder storage area of my maxpedition.

When I'm at base camp, I like setting up a bushcraft chair.

I'm planning a backpacking trip into the Sierra next summer, where I apparently will be required to have a bear proof food canister. So I just picked up a Bear Vault (BV500: 2lb 9oz), which also doubles as a camp stool.

If out on a day hike, I can always just throw my poncho on the ground and sit on that.

Otherwise, one of the foam things that others have posted work as good as anything.

I sit a lot when watercolor painting outside.

Cheap and easy:
Sitting on the ground
I purchased a very cheap closed foam mat, and cut it to bum size.
It insulates from cold and damp.
If it is too cold I just fold it double
It folds or rolls up to very small
Just a couple of bucks

For sitting higher when I am using an easel, I use a three legged stool.
Very light and goes on the side straps of my pack.
REI sells them for $20
