need some thoughts about Damascus

Bruce

Does the blade have a Hamon. If it does you can do a semi traditional polish like the Japanese smiths do. Many do not enhance the pattern welding but bring out the hamon and allow the pattern to come up a more through handling and age.

No Hamons on this one, after having negative comments on hamons in Damascus blades I have been fully hardening them.I may go back to a differential heat treat after I see how this works out....Got some ideas of things to try....

Got it almost done and made a mistake so I have a little setback, plus I forgot today was Halloween so it will probably be sometime tomorrow before I have pics up.It will be in a new thread.

The steel should complement or enhance the knife as a whole. I don't know if our opinions are as important as what works best in the design and vision you have for the piece. There are many etching processes and times for each process that yield different results.

I the displayed knives of Damascus steel that were not etched. These knives were handled and viewed by hundreds of people. No one noticed that the knives were made of Damascus. But they were not looking for it in the steel...Take Care...Ed

I did get a etch that let me put the mirror polish back on the blade with the pattern showing,it looks cool.Once all done if we decide it doesnt look good enough I can always go back and resist the handle and etch her deep.

Why not use some Super Blue to do a light etching and then rub out the highs with 2000grit. Follow that with either paper bag or a piece of leather for the final finish.
That will give you a decent contarast that can still be polished!

That would look cool also R Hankins...omly this knife will look cooler with a polished (mirror-satin) blade and guard instead of a dark colored etched blade..I am not looking for a smooth blade but a shiny Damascus one..

Give me a call sometime Mr. Hankins
