Hi all,
I was looking into some maroon Scotch Brite Wheels to put satin finishes on some of my knives. I've been looking for 8 inch wheels that I can use on my bench grinder, which has a 5/8" arbor. All I've found are the 3M wheels that are 8" by 1" wide with a 3" center hole, at least that's how I'm understanding the product descriptions. I've looked around for and adapter to go from the 3" hole down to 5/8" but no luck so far. Anybody know if this product exists, and if so where I could find one? The wheels are a bit pricey, and I'd rather not experiment on my own!:o

Thanks,
Jonny

Not exactly what you are looking for but I use a 6" wheel with the 1" hole and got a spacer to go from 1" to 1/2" I am sure you can find a spacer that will go from 1" to 5/8 but that's for a 6" wheel. The place i got the wheel from locally had the spacer for a buck.

Hey gixxer,
Yeah I found the six inch wheels and figured maybe I could find a bushing that goes from 1" to 5/8, but I was hoping for an 8" model to get more use out of it. Out of curiosity, what did you pay for your 6" wheel? I'm looking at the medium grit maroon wheels.

Also, I've found some 3M 1x42" scotch brite belts that I could use on my belt sander. It would definitely be easier to change out belts on my sander for different jobs rather than change out wheels on a bench grinder, so I am looking into that option as well. Another thing to keep in mind is that my Delta belt sander has a solid flat backing just behind the belt from the bottom of the platen going up about 4 inches. I'm thinking that it might be difficult to hold knife blades at the right angle to get full contact for a satin finish with that there. Just feels like it might cause me to miss some spots, so the belts might not be the best. The do seem like a pretty cool addition to my shop though:D

I did not get the actual 3M brand and I paid $40 give or take. to be honest with you I have not practiced enough with it to get anything resembling acceptable results. Not the wheel's fault, all me. I found it difficult to maintain equal pressure while covering the whole blade flat to get all scratches a consistent "sheen" or depth. I think maybe the wheel I got is too hard. When I get around to it I might try a belt.

Yeah, but think about it.....when I'm setting a bevel on an edge with the belt sander it's great to have that piece of sheet metal behind the belt to give me a solid vertical to use as a reference point. But if I was trying to satin finish a whole blade with the scotch brite belt, I think that hard vertical surface might get in the way of uniform abrasion. Of course, I still might buy a few and try it out:D:D

What you need are the collar adapters for those rim wheels. IIRC, I got mine from either directly from 3M, or my jewelry supplier.I'll look in the shop, there may be an extra set .

You can see a set in the photo here:

The 8X1X3" wheel you have is something like this one:

Contact 3M with this information and ask for the part number for the rim adapter.

Thanks for the info:thumbup: I noticed those collar adapters in some photos, but didn't know what they were called so it was tough searching for them. I'll go from there and see where it gets me.

Thanks again,
Jonny
