I have been following this forum for several months. My knife experience has been putting scales on purchased blanks. I live in Costa Rica, a 3rd world country, and am also partially handicapped by not being fluent in Spanish.

I want to try making some knives with the stock-removal method. I can't locate any belt grinders here but I do have access to a good size disc grinder.
There are places that do heat treating here but the steels that are offered are limited. I can only find 4140, 1020, and 1045 in carbon steel.

Question, what are the pros and cons of these steels? Can they be used for knives and if so what is the heat treating procedures?

None of those will make a knife.
Find a spring shop, or a truck repair garage. Tell then you want some 5160. It is what they make leaf springs from. Another idea would be to find a machine shop. They could get you some O-1,A-2, and perhaps some 1080.
