need suggestions for a large lockback...

Forget the $50 limit, and buy yourself a (used) Spyderco Chinook, SOG Tomcat, or even a REKAT Carnivour (it's not a lockback, but it IS a very strong folder.). For something alittle lighter, there's the Cold Steel Voyager series to look at.

Yep, The Buck 560 is a screaming bargain that you can up grade later.
The other contenders are..........

Cold steel voayagers......lots of work knife for the dollar.
Schrade LB-7 ... an old favorite that is nearly indistructable (the best bargain)
Buck 110FG or 112FG.......again old favorites that never fail.
Spyderco Enduras or Delicas......very well thought of
Sog tomcat......heavy and bullet proof.

The Voyagers do not have a guard per say, but as I mentioned in another thread, the handles have curves and swells in all the right places. The Voyagers I have handled have VERY secure grips. It was brought up that sandpaper or a Dremel can reshape zytel.

The best price I can find for them is Midsouth Shooters:

If you really like your 110, you may wish in buy some JB Cold Weld. It is like an epoxy for metal. You can use it like putty to form a guard on the knife you already have. I use it to "raise" a liner on cheap knives when I sharpen the tip outside the liner.

For the price range you are looking for, I also vote for the Cold Steel product. They offer a good range of lockbacks. They are very strong and very very very sharp.

Check out the prices from Roger at Bayou Lafourche Knife Works. Their web site is: http://64.49.193.154/store.asp

I am not sure why his web site reads this way, but it works!

If you don't see a certain style, call him and he will quote you. Their prices and service is top quality.

I agree with most of the above suggestions. Here's one more that nobody has mentioned, but is a knife that is seriously hefty and seems to meet most of your criteria. Plus it's only $45!
