Need Suggestions for Knife for Retirement Gift

Well, thanks to Jules (Westllen on the BF) I do have one of the Stars and Stripes Sebenzas, and I do love it.

If you want to look further into Sebenzas, just give Jules a holler. He is a GREAT guy ... one of the VERY best ... and he's got some time on his hands these days.

As you've already figured out, you will find a LOT to think about over on the Custom page ... :D

How about engaging in some sleuthing in the next couple of days? That is, manufacture a reason, when he is nearby, to have him cut something for you. That gives you an opening to snoop around about what he currently carries, maybe owns, and likes. Or you can "lie" to him and tell him you are thinking about buying a knife for some big doofus guy or other and are trying to narrow it down between slipjoints, a custom fixed blade, or maybe a Sebenza and since you know he is a knife guy, etc... He'll likely never suspect a thing; we (guys) are pretty dense once a gal starts talking to us, acting interested in something we like, and batting her eyes.
Of course no one has yet mentioned an auto, or a double action. I am partial to Microtech LCCs (since you are thinking higher $$) but there are lots of very good options in this general area, if that's something he likes. However, that tends to be a narrower range of knife collectors, and I would want to be sure he likes autos before I would go there.
all da best,
rats...

Okay, it is practically signed, sealed, and delivered! I found THE knife. Of course I will have to inspect it first, and maybe take a 2-week road trip with it to make sure it is an acceptable EDC.... :D

Here it is! By Todd Davison, a custom folder.

Ain't she a beauty? I love the black/white stag. I've never seen anything like it before. One of a kind and he better like it or it's gonna be MY EDC. :D As soon as I saw this knife, I knew it was THE knife.

Knife is courtesy of James Todd. He hangs out here once in a while. Some of you may know of him.... He gave me a great deal on this sweet little knife. $5 for the knife, plus S&H. But let me just say that his S&H charges are really exorbitant!!! Thank goodness the rest of you don't charge hundreds of dollars for S&H. But I suppose his time is valuable. :p ;)

Pretty bitchin', huh? Thanks, Jim, for having the absolutely most perfect knife. I sincerely appreciate the fair deal we worked out. ;) ;) ;)

All this time, I never knew anyone ever clicked "Custom Knives for Sale" link, but thanks for looking, I know he will love it.
I did & do, just that Blade 2008 bills are coming due.:grumpy:

Well, I certainly clicked on your "Custom Knives for Sale" link. And look what I found! How lucky for me. How lucky for Joe.

If you were hanging around Giggy and Gus at Blade, I'm certain you are extremely in debt!!!
:D Those two can be a bad influence on anyone attending Blade. At least those are the stories people are sharing.

Thanks again, Jim. Great deal. Stunning folder.

I missed the Gig by one night, but that Gus sure knows how to spend. He won the Bose lottery and kept it.

Hey! A picture of Joe opening the package! Duh. Why didn't I think of that? I will definitely make sure there is a "photo opportunity." Joe won't mind at all, and he will be proud to display his new knife.

A custom sheath.....hm-m-m-m-m.....not unless I have Mike Bartol make one. But it does come with a pocket sheath. I forget who makes it.

I have the original sheath, but I preferred it in a William Henry pocket sheath, snug fit, but it keeps it just fine. Judy will get both. A new WH one and Todd's original one.

Jim

PS: Judy, I will stay subscribed to this thread until I see his face upon opening it. That is assuming you do not keep it.;)

Wow, 2 sheaths to choose from. Awesome! :D

You'll see Joe's face. Happy or disappointed. But he'll be happy. How could he not? But then again..... I do like this knife A LOT and maybe it should be MY EDC.....:p

I echo some others and would go with a custom Buck 110. You can get one with S30V steel and some other options for under $100. I am not sure if you could get one in time for the retirement.

Wow, good choice, it looks very nice. I'm sure Joe would appreicate it. What steel is it made of?
And guys, she already bought a knife. All you're doing is giving her an excuse to keep it. :D

Wow.

Just ... wow.

If he doesn't LOVE that knife, he's not a 'real man.':eek:

'Real men' drool over knives like that.;)

That is going to be one happy Marine. :D

That is going to be one happy Marine. :D

Joe better be one happy RETIRED Marine who is retiring a second time - this time from the school district!

He has put off retiring for so long that he just recently found out that he is losing money by continuing to work! He'll make more money retired.

If only I could say the same for myself..... :(

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I am very pleased with my choice. The gals at work were also impressed with the knife when I showed them the photo.

I received the Todd Davison folder today. It is sooooo much nicer than even the photo led me to believe. The gals at work, who are not into knives at all, were thrilled with it and all agreed that it is a knife that Joe will like (cuz I told them he would!).

And my boss asked me yesterday about a possible knife gift for Joe, so I headed him in the direction of the Sebenza Stars and Stripes. I'm just about 99.9% certain that he and the other supervisors are going to get that one for Joe.

Pretty cool, huh? I'm not sure where my boss is going to purchase the Sebenza, but I did tell him I could probably post in "Wanted to Buy" here and see if anyone has one they would like to sell for reasonable. But I'm not gonna bug him about it. He's a grown man and can make lots of decisions - that is why he makes the big bucks as the head of our Division.

Judy

ACCCKKKK! Sorry TJ, I PM'd you before I read the entire thread. Great choice for your gift! But, I hope you take my advice to heart for any future gifting. In case you are feeling REALLY generous, I too like Todd's knives. Maybe Christmas? My birthday next year? (or fashionably late for this year... late May);):D

rats,

I tried that route on Monday. "Hey, Joe, let me see what knife you're carrying today." Joe pats the pockets on his levis and said, "I don't have a knife on me today. I must have forgot." Dang me. While I was asking him, I had my Spyderco Delica 4 in my hand, and handed it to him and told him there was something wrong with it. He took it and started looking at it trying to figure out what was wrong. So I said, "It doesn't seem to want to cut anything. Would you sharpen it for me?" (heck, had to keep the conversation on knives....) He said, "Sure, I'll run it over the grinder." I got it back the next day all nice and sharp.

So when I saw him the next day, I asked, "So what knives are you carrying today? He patted his pocket, looked down, and said, "Well, I have two clipped to my pocket." That's how well it worked trying to see what he carries. He knew I had just gotten my Delica back nice and sharp, so I couldn't ask him to cut anything open for me.

Oh well. He's gonna get what he's gonna get and he's gonna like it!

Judy

Joe is either one great guy or Judy is one sweet person! (I suspect both) it really warms my heart reading stuff like this and the love and respect people can have. May it spread and continue, and thanks for sharing it with us :)
