Need suggestions on what to do with unwanted knife

I have this knife that I picked up ages ago. I can't even remember where or why, but it's basically an old chinese made knife I had lying around.

The problem is, it's really not worth selling, (Not only would I not get any money from it, but I'd likely end up losing money from fees to list it) but I hate wasting things, and it seems like a waste to just toss it in the bin. Is there somewhere I can donate this or is there something interesting I can do with it?

I'm also curious to hear suggestions from other members who may have faced this scenario before.

i'm a fan of recycling. i was given a cheap folding hunter by my nephews a few years back for christmas. it's the thought that counts and it means alot to me. i also believe in using a gift for its intended purpose. that said i carried and used it as often as i could. it held up just like i thought it would even though i gave it special attention. after the scales broke and it would pinch me i continued to use it until the lock broke and it became a liability. i removed the blade and ground it down to a 3/4" cutting edge with the rest becoming a para cord wrapped handle. small nylon sheath and it became a useful boot knife. best thing is both the boys now are calling dibs when they get old enough to have it!!

Give it away!

just give it away

Here's the thing, call me a cheapskate, but I don't really have the cash for postage at the moment, though that may change later on, and none of my immediate friends/family want it, although I agree with the concept of giving it away. I'd love for it to get some use or to give it to someone who wants it.

Interesting idea. I would love to do something with this knife, a "Refurbishment" of some kind you know? Sharpen it up really nice, remove the logo on the blade, and maybe somehow change the colour of the grips, (they're plastic, so I don't know, some plastikote maybe?). I may have the money and resources to do something with it later, would love to turn it into a project of some kind.

EDIT: turns out only the grip is plastic, but the guard and base are metal, just has that cheap "plastic chrome" finish, go figure.

I'd remove everything from the guard down if I was going to try to salvage that.

someone would probably pay the postage for it if you would give it to them...just a thought

We used to have an old saying in the photography world - If an image doesn't work, frame it. If it still doesn't work, mat it and if it still doesn't work, hang it. So, in this case, hang it. ;)

Give it to a kid! In the old days, you gave a boy a nice little pocket knife. Well that's a little risky today. He'll either be a smart alec and take it to school where the now paranoid administrators will ruin his life because of it or he'll just forget he's got it. Either way, he's in a heap of trouble. A nice big bowie knife like object like that can be parentally supervised because a kid will want to hang that on the wall and take it out in the woods. A boy would like that.

Use it in the garden or around the house for dirty work that you normally wouldn't use a good knife for i.e. digging holes for flowers, hacking away at shrubs, cutting up branches, stuff like that.

I'd be happy to give it away for free if someone pays the postage.

Gives me a bit of an idea, perhaps I could clean it up a bit, put it in a frame and sell it as an "In case of zombie invasion, break glass" display kit or something?

Put it in the trash where it belongs.

At the very least, I'd probably give the grips away for free if anyone wants them, and take the rest (all metal) to a metal smelting yard so they can melt it and reuse it.

I guess a big bowie knife would be a lot harder for them to "sneak" anywhere, but who knows. If I was going to give a responsible kid anything, it would be the old fashioned idea of a swiss army knife; teach them how to clean it, sharpen it using a stone etc, and how to use it practically. My dad got me a Victorinox for my 18th birthday and I've used it so much, an invaluable tool!

Throwing knife until it breaks:thumbup:

Would be a great way to practice I guess, hehe.

I guess I could throw it in the toolbox or something. I don't own a lot of knives, but I've put a spare knock-off swiss army knife in my medical kit, just in case, makes sense to have something like this in the toolbox. If nothing else, the saw-edge on the rear is stupidly sharp, I've never felt anything like it. If it can keep an edge, it serves as a saw of some kind at least.

hahaha, i bet you couldnt sell that thing for 10 bucks, but if you did that, people would pay 70 for it

Yeah, I was thinking I could sharpen it, maybe paint the grip safety orange, red or yellow, some "Emergency" colour or something, and make it look like a zombie hunter.

Take it apart, save the guard an pommel for spare parts, sand the writing off, get a piece of wood(like a broom handle or something) attach the blade to the stick and you have a pole arm to play with
