As I wait for my first JK knife; I'm starting to think about the next one. I knew I wanted a set of outdoor traditional knives to use when camping and going into the woods.
I ordered a Nessmuk and was lucky enough to win an LRK which looks wonderful from the pics. and reviews.
Now, I'm considering either a traditional Kephart or a Green River. They seem similar in style and will go fine with the set I would like to built. I like that they are classic designs, simple , functional and elegant.
I would appreciate any suggestions or comment about which one to get or recommendation on another JK knife.
It will be used for camping, wood, bush and food chores. I bring a hatchet to camp but often times is left behind when venturing deeper into the woods, so I might use it for some chopping.
Thanks in advance

If you are looking to carry all of them together as kind of a three piece set, I would go with a larger blade like the Hudson Bay. John's Kephart is one of the (or IMHO "is the") best out there but I would see it as somewhat redundant with the Nessie. If you just want one, I would go Kephart. It was my first JK and is still one of my favorite blades.

Although I have the roach belly and the Viktim on order, both of which, to me, seem like traditional style patterns, I would agree with the above poster and go with a chopper like a hudson bay if you want to round out your collection. You also might think about a 'baby edc size kephart. Something you don't have that i bet you would use all the time! Good luck and a great problem to ponder.

I see no reason to add to this, outdoorsfan hit it bag on as always. Personally i think i'd prefer the looks of the kep but the G-river is a looker in its own right.

Well, you have the wide blade covered with the muk so the green river would be a great companion blade IMO.
For a chopper I'd go with either the Hudson Bay or the LOBO with the Hudson Bay being the more traditional design.

A JK hatchet would be a nice add as well. IIRC frontiertom did a hatchet and Muk combo that was super sweet

Thanks for all your suggestions; I'll probably bring one knife and a smaller blade. Unfortunately I just recently discovered John's work and I already own a couple of hatchets, maybe down the road. I want a set but only one from the set will come on each trip unless the Ms wants to carry one. She has a few Spyderco folders and a Roselli carpenter.
The Kephart appeals to me but I agree with Mykel M and KY English that the Green River is a looker.
I'm still welcoming your suggestions

My favorite (that I have experience with) is the old JK Hiker, it's around the size - 8.5 Overall I think - comfortable handle, classic shape, and just pretty as heck, i picked one up of the forums here second hand, wouldn't have chosen the bloodwood myself so I'm glad i did because it's a great handle:

Of course every one mentioned here is also a great choice to...so not sure thats very helpful :D

I don't think of the knatchet as tradtional, unless you're thinking vikings, but WOW WOW WOW do I want one. I think after the two I have ordered, the knatchet will be next.

Hey John, searching the forum, but couldn't find it, didn't you make a 5" Hudson Bay one time?

The Hiker looks very nice too. I think is becoming harder but i like seeing all the possible options that are showing up

5", 6", 7", 8", and 9", have all been made.

My suggestion would be to go with a LRK and a Kephart or one of his other woods knives. The LRK looks like it would be great for skinning squirrels and a million other small jobs. The Kephart or other model would handle everything else. You mentioned that you might leave the axe at home. I think that, rather than using your knife to chop (which nevertheless seems to be a hugely popular use for knives here on BF), to pick up a folding saw like a Silky or a Bahco Laplander. They weigh next to nothing, fit in a cargo pocket, and can handle anything up to 6" thick or so. You will never regret getting one, I promise! Along with the LRK and woods knife, your cutting-tool needs would be 100% covered for most trips.

it doesn't get any easier in my small amount of experience, :)

as a wise man told ne in another thread chose the one you like the look of most because then you respect nd apreciate it.

my method is to flip a coin and see if I'm dissapointed. ;)

I would suggest the spike hawk max lol :) or the jk phoenix but are some of my favorites from john. pick whatever you think looks best, as all john's work is great

Or you can wait untill I debut the new Bird & Trout knife that Peter Howard (KYenglish) designed early next week.
