Ok I have ground a knife blade out of a old lawn mower blade. Does anyone know what steel they are? I know its carbon, but thats about it. Today I hardened it to the point it became non magnetic along the blade, then water quenched it. What temp. should I temper the steel at and for how long? Im thing like 425 for 1 hour?

PS: Will just jb-welding the handle to my full tang knife make it secure? Jb-weld has a tensile str. of like 3500 pounds.

Nobody else must have a 10 ft pole so I will give it a shot. First your real problem is not knowing what steel you have. Thats why it is best to start with a known steel. IF the steel was 1080 you may have got the edge hot enough to form good martensite. Any other steel you did not get the max from it. Anything with much more or less carbon than .85% will need more heat. If it had any chrome in it it would need to hold its particular temp for at least 10 minutes or more depending on the steels composition. IF it was 1080-1085 you maybe alright if the entire edge was non magnetic. IF so 2 2 hour tempers at 425 f should be good. Only testing the finished product will tell if you have a decent blade.

I would add some pins to the scales (handle). I like JB Weld but, some pins will help out a lot it it is hit on the edges. Even 2 well spaced 1/8" pins will add a lot of handle security. Good luck Jim

I gots me a slingblade, some people calls it a kaiser blade but I calls it a slingblade mmmmmmmmmh hmmmmmmm...

No seriously man I'm all for recycling but use some known steel that way you can harden and heat-treat to the maximum. Good practice run though! :D

Sorry Ibtv4u I am all out of 10 foot pole's. i think there is a shortage of them and a lot of makers are runing very low on them so there saving them for a rainy day :D
